Pepsi gets exclusive soda rights in district
Pepsi has won the cola wars--at least in San Jose Unified schools. As part of a deal expected to bring $5 million to the school district over the next 10 years, local schools will begin selling only Pepsi products next month.
San Jose Unified trustees gave their approval to the exclusive deal on Oct. 21. Board members Carol Myers, Rich Garcia, Veronica Lewis and Gary Rummelhoff voted in favor of the contract, giving Pepsi Bottling Group exclusive right to sell sodas, juices and water in the district. Board member Jorge Gonzalez voted against the deal.
The board has come under fire in recent months for considering the deal. Opponents say the deal will commercialize education and encourage children to drink soda. Supporters argue that the schools need the money and that kids will only benefit from the deal.

Pumpkin-heads light up Nevada Avenue
As Halloween approaches, eerie lights have sprung up along Nevada Avenue as if by magic. For the third year in a row, pumpkin-face lights line the street, between Bird and Hill avenues. The orange globes appeared at the beginning of October, but ghostly sources inform the Willow Glen Resident that the lights will disappear after Halloween. That gives Willowites about four more days to visit this visual treat.

Farmers get into the Halloween spirit
In the spirit of the season, ghosts, goblins and ghouls will be selling their homegrown flowers and vegetables--and handing out candy--at the Willow Glen Farmer's Market on Oct. 30. Costumed farmers will hand out treats between 8 a.m. and noon.
Children--and kids at heart--can come in costume, pick up a free balloon, visit the Pumpkin Patch and listen to Halloween stories. Festivities will also include a pumpkin-decorating booth, a guess-the-weight-of-the-pumpkin contest with a goody-basket prize, Halloween craft kits, and holiday tunes by Frank the Accordionist.
The Willow Glen Farmer's Market is held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at Willow Glen Elementary School on the corner of Lincoln and Minnesota avenues. For more information, call 408.353.4293.

Summit focuses on affordable housing
It's no secret that Silicon Valley lacks affordable housing, but solving the problem hasn't been much easier than defining it.
On Nov. 5 the Santa Clara Board of Supervisors and the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group are hosting a housing summit at Wyndham Hotel in San Jose.
The summit is aimed at finding real solutions to the problem of housing the area's public employees, teachers, elderly and others whose incomes can't keep up with the valley's skyrocketing housing costs.
Andrew Cuomo, secretary of U.S. Housing and Urban Development, will be the keynote speaker at the summit, which will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Space is limited and the cost is $125, which includes breakfast and lunch. To register, call 408.501.7864.
