But Willow Glen girls fall at BVAL

    By Dick Sparrer

When Don DuShane was predicting title favorites back in September, he knew his Willow Glen girls would figure among the top contenders in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

But that they would go undefeated? DuShane never imagined. But the Rams did just that this fall, stringing together 14 straight victories to win the league championship.

In the process, Willow Glen won 18 matches in a row to open the '99 season. They didn't lose, in fact, until just last week when the Rams dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Yerba Buena in the BVAL playoffs.

Willow Glen nailed its 14th league win last Monday, beating Leigh 4-3 to complete the 14-0 campaign.

Senior Cheryl Mah rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, and sophomore Kelsey Giambruno continued her winning ways with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles. Giambruno posted a 14-0 record in league play.

Sophomores Aubrey Schatz and Bianca Gomez won 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 No. 2 doubles, and Stephanie Mansfield and Chu Huyhn won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3. Mansfield, a freshman, and Huyhn, a sophomore, were also undefeated in league play.

Giambruno won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, and Mansfield and Huyhn combined for a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Rams lost 4-3 to Yerba Buena later in the week.

Neda Dowlatshahi and Tram Nguyen came through with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
