Used volumes sought for 1999 book fair

The early bird gets the bookworm, so Saratoga's Villa Montalvo is already looking for used books for the "specials table" at its eighth annual book fair, set for March 20.

The "specials table" features hardback books and quality paperbacks, which must be in good shape. The book fair and sale benefits Montalvo's Phelan Library, which volunteers are working to restore to its 1930 ambience, both physically and through a book collection reflecting the tastes of the late Sen. James Phelan.

For more information or to donate books, call Althea Anderson at 650/254-1148.

Locals turn house into neighborhood haunt on Oct. 31

Some folks believe that a camera can steal your spirit, but the children who come to the annual haunted house set up by local photographers Jim and Barb Eagan have no such worries.

This Halloween will mark the sixth year that the Eagans, owners of Eagan Photography & Video on Stockton Avenue, have turned their home into a fright fest for the neighborhood children. Besides ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties, their haunted house features stops for kids to bob for apples, carve jack-o-lanterns and get their photos taken in costume.

The haunted house is staffed by the Eagans and by neighborhood volunteers. There is no admission charge and the photos are free, but donations will be accepted for the Spartan Keyes Neighborhood Association. Donations can also come in the form of pumpkins, fruit and candy for the trick-or-treaters.

The Eagans' haunted house, located at 873 S. Ninth St., will be open to all comers beginning at 6 p.m. on All Hallows Eve. For more information or to volunteer, call Jim Eagan at 295-6585.

Pollster Mervin Field to speak at SJSU

Mervin Field, founder of The Field Poll, California's most influential and prestigious public opinion poll, will speak at San Jose State University on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in Morris Dailey Auditorium in Tower Hall. His address on "Polls: Readings and Misreadings" is free and open to the public.

Field is the Fall 1998 Don Edwards Lecturer, and his address is sponsored by the SJSU's Political Science, History and Communication Studies departments, the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, the Institute for Social Responsibility and the Silicon Valley Forum of the Commonwealth Club of California.

Field founded Field Research Corporation in 1946 and The Field Poll in 1947. The Field Poll is a public-opinion news service that has published more than 1,889 reports on a wide variety of political, social and public-policy issues.

In 1976, Field established the Field Institute, which took over The Field Poll's operations. The institute is a nonpartisan, nonprofit public-policy research organization financially supported by academic institutions, government agencies, foundations, and various media. FRC and the Field Institute now make up one of the largest survey research centers headquartered in the West.

The Don Edwards Lecture in Politics and History was established in 1995 to honor Congressman Don Edwards, who represented San Jose for 32 years in the U.S. House of Representatives.
