Around The Glen
Willow Glen Middle and High School library open to the public
The library for both Willow Glen Middle and High Schools is now the library for the community, too.
The school library opened its doors to students and others for its twice-weekly after school hours on Oct. 3, after parents became concerned that their children did not have time to use the library's resources during the school day, said librarian Judy Marlin.
"The parents really wanted to try this, and they'd like it to be a success," she said.
Marlin said the Willow Glen Middle and High School Foundation initiated the project to extend the library's hours, and both schools have contributed seed money to make it happen.
Marlin said that she hopes to implement some special programs for the extended hours. The possibilities include book and storytime clubs, poetry readings and "Latte in the Library," a library coffeehouse program for older students.
"We'd like to have a nice turnout and develop a good program," she said.
Opening the library to people other than school students came about after some students came in with friends from other schools, she said.
She said that only students are allowed to check books out of the library, however.
The library is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on holidays and days before holidays. The library is located at Cottle Avenue and Malone Road.
