The Miss USA and Miss Teen USA Pageants are seeking girls between the ages of 14 and 26 to represent their local areas at the upcoming Miss Almaden Valley USA and Miss Almaden Valley Teen USA pageants. Two contests will be held, one for teens ages 14 to 19 and the other for young adults between ages 18 and 26. Contestants in both pageants will compete in three areas. "One third of the competition is a one-on-one interview with five judges," pageant director Tracy Crist said. "They're looking for personality--approachable, likable ... a nice person. A third of the competition includes the swimsuit contest, and they are looking for physical fitness, not necessarily the skinniness. A third of the competition is the evening gown portion. We're looking for grace and class--not judging the dress but how the person wears the gown and the overall beauty of the girl." Teenagers in Monterey, Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties are eligible. The lucky winners can go on to compete in the statewide pageant and even in the national competition on the first weekend of September 1999. Winners can collect $150,000 in cash and prizes. The local pageants will be held Jan. 3, 1999, at the Newark Pavilion. Entries are due Dec. 2, 1998. There will be an orientation on this day at the Newark Mall Community Room in Newark from 6:15 to 9 p.m. Anyone interested in competing should call Tracy at 510/742-1715. --Sharon Parks Restaurant hosts dinner; proceeds go to Food Bank The Second Harvest Food Bank will soon get a hefty donation of food just in time for the holidays.
