The regular season came to an end last week for the Willow Glen girls field hockey team--and not exactly the way the Rams had hoped it would.

Willow Glen went up against Prospect, the Panthers winless in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. And a victory would have been helpful for the Rams in their quest for a berth in Central Coast Section playoffs.

But there would be no win for the Rams last Wednesday.

Prospect battled Willow Glen to a 1-1 tie. It marked the first time in the league season that the Panthers had notched any decision other than a loss.

The Panthers finished the year 0-9-1 thanks to the tie. Willow Glen saw its league record stretch to 3-3-4. A week earlier the Rams had tied St. Francis and fallen to unbeaten Mitty.

Jenny Holt, a junior forward, knocked in a first-half goal off an assist from senior Samantha Bruni to give the Rams a 1-0 lead at intermission against the Panthers.

Senior goalkeeper Lisa Hunter blanked Prospect for a half, but the Panthers tied the game with a goal in the second half.

That's how it would wind up, and the tie left the Rams with a 10-3-4 record in the regular season.

The Rams hope to claim a berth in the upcoming CCS playoffs. Seeding for the post-season tournament will take place on Nov. 7 with tourney play to begin Nov. 9.

    Rams fall to Chargers

Senior quarterback Bobby Hobbs completed 22 passes, two for touchdowns, but the Willow Glen football team dropped a 58-14 nonleague decision to Leland last Friday.

Hobbs hit senior tight end Daniel Rice with a 7-yard touchdown pass in the first period and went to senior fullback Adam Copas for a 3-yard TD toss in the fourth. But the two touchdowns did little to offset the Leland onslaught.

Hobbs hooked up on 22 of 42 passes for 239 yards in the game. He has now completed 134 passes for 1,875 yards and 14 touchdowns this fall.

The CCS-leading passer will be trying to top the 2,000-yard mark for the season this week when the Rams host Gunderson on Nov. 9, 2:45 p.m.

The Grizzlies are 3-2 in the Santa Teresa Division and 4-5 for the year following a 28-14 loss to Andrew Hill last Saturday. The Rams are 0-9 for the year and 0-5 in the division. But Willow Glen could knock Gunderson out of the CCS playoff hunt with an upset win.

"We have a chance to be a spoiler," said WG coach Sonny Flores. "We look forward to the challenge."

The coach was pleased with Hobbs' effort against Leland, saying "he's been real consistent the whole year."

The coach also praised the work of receivers Mark Sarinara (six catches, 87 yards) and Joe Gutierrez (four catches, 65 yards), and singled out Copas at fullback.

"I was real pleased with Adam's effort," said Flores of Copas, who ran 10 times for 70 tough yards.

Rice finished the afternoon with five catches for 52 yards and senior Gabe Candelaria caught four balls for 39 yards before leaving the game with a season-ending knee injury.

"We're going to miss him," said Flores of Candelaria. "It's been a real pleasure coaching him for the last four years."

    Panthers split, Rams fall

The Presentation girls volleyball team split a pair of matches in Mt. Hamilton Division play last week while the Willow Glen lost their only match.

Julie Harris buried seven kills and Taylor Rayfield slammed down five to lead the Panthers to a 15-1, 15-0, 15-4 victory over Prospect to open the week.

But Presentation dropped a 16-14, 17-15, 15-5 decision to unbeaten Mitty later in the week. The Panthers slipped to 12-2 in the division, their only two losses coming against Mitty. Presentation is 28-7 for the year.

Willow Glen lost 15-5, 15-7, 15-7 to Mt. Pleasant in Santa Teresa Division action.

It was the last week of play for the Rams, and marked the end of high school competition for seniors Jessie Hopkins, Kara Butler and Julia Garrotto.

    Morici, Cook star

Junior Adrianna Morici of Presentation and sophomore Jennifer Cook of Willow Glen were amont the top 20 finishers at the Blossom Valley Athletic League cross country finals held Oct. 30 on the 2.95-mile course at Crystal Springs in Belmont.

Morici finished 15th overall in 20:59 to lead the Panthers to a team seventh at the finals, and Cook was 20th in 21:27 to lead the Willow Glen showing at the meet.
