    SCI's Escape School program teaches kids to avoid abduction

    The Service Corporation International Escape School will hold an educational program on Nov. 15, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bagby Elementary School.

    The program's goal is to educate children and parents about avoiding abduction and being safe at school or when home alone. The program was created by a group of funeral home directors in the area and has, so far, drawn large crowds at previous programs.

    The program is designed not to scare children, but to show them they have the power to avoid dangerous situations. The program is free. For more information, call 408.377.8963.

    2000 Who's Who book recognizes teachers

    Willow Glen High School teachers James Bernstein, James Cullison, Gloria Curry, Amy Gannon, James Patterson and Tina Van Laarhoven have been recognized for their teaching excellence and honored in the sixth edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2000. This honor is reserved for teachers selected by one or more of their former students who have been listed in either Who's Who Among American High School Students or The National Dean's List.

    Lynbrook crafts faire helps school Music Boosters program

    Lynbrook Instrumental Music Boosters welcome the public to their annual Holiday Crafts Faire on Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lynbrook High School, 1280 Johnson Ave, San Jose.

    Thornton Wilder play 'Our Town' comes to Presentation H.S.

    Presentation High School will host the performance of Thornton Wilder's play Our Town Nov. 9 through 12, at the high school. The cast is made up of 30 young men and women from different schools in the Silicon Valley.

    The play will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $8 for students and children, $10 for adults. For more information, call 408.264.1664.

    Girl Scout Troop 779 seeking new members

    Cadette Girl Scout Troop 779 invites girls in the Willow Glen area in grades seven, eight or nine to join their troop. Troop program and activities are girl-planned using the patrol system, with girls working in smaller groups for many activities.

    Troop programming is organized so those who wish to do so can earn the Silver Award--the Cadette Scout's highest award. The troop camps regularly and does overnights. Bike and orienteering trips are planned, along with a cross-country ski trip in March.

    History San Jose offers speaker series at Barnes & Noble

    History San Jose and Barnes & Noble are jointly offering a new quarterly speaker series, History Makers. The first of the series is: "Valley of Heart's Delight: Perspectives on the Agricultural Industry." It will be held on Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 5353 Almaden Expwy, San Jose.

    The panel will feature Lee Lester, a longtime valley orchardist and partner in Lester Brothers; Mabel Maltos, a historian from the Milpitas Historical Society; Glenn George, a valley businessman and chairman of Joseph George Distributing; and Yvonne Jacobson, author of Passing Farms: Enduring Values.     American Association of University Women holds open house

    The San Jose branch of the American Association of University Women announces an Open House at its headquarters building, 1165 Minnesota Ave on Nov. 9, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Open House is designed to welcome new and prospective members and to acquaint them with the branch, its services and its members. Refreshments will be served free of charge. The association offers affiliate membership to students. Regular membership is open to all persons who have earned a baccalaureate degree. The American Association of University Women promotes equality for all women and girls, lifelong education and positive societal change.
