    High School Heisman Trophy

Most football fans are aware that the Heisman Trophy is presented each year to the outstanding college football player in the nation.

But high school athletes compete for a Heisman award, too. And a number of young stars from the area are in the running for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.

The award, established in 1994 by Wendy's Restaurants, honors top senior scholar-citizen-athletes across the country who have achieved excellence in academics, community involvement and athletics. This year, more than 12,000 athletes nationwide have been nominated for the prestigious award.

Sharon Potter of Del Mar, Jennifer Demers of Pioneer, Stephanie Wong of Presentation and Lucia Catania of Willow Glen are among the area female candidates, and Seth Andrews of Willow Glen is among the male nominees.

The field will be narrowed to 102 state finalists (including the District of Columbia) and then to 12 national finalists before national winners will be announced in December.

    Baseball Camp

He was one of the finest baseball players the Santa Clara Valley has produced.

And now Mark O'Brien is giving something back to the community as he hosts the annual Stanford baseball camps for players ages 12-18 on the Stanford campus.

The camps will feature hitting and defense, with a special camp for pitchers ages 13-18. Camps will be held Nov. 26-28, Dec. 20-22 and Dec. 27-29 at Sunken Diamond, and the cost is $110 per session.

O'Brien starred on the diamond at St. Francis High School before going on to excel at both De Anza Community College and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. He later coached at each college before taking a position as an assistant coach at Stanford. O'Brien was the first-base coach for the Cardinal team that competed in the NCAA World Series last spring.

For information on the camps, call O'Brien at 650.723.4528.
