The Willow Glen ResidentAround The GlenBoy Scouts embark on food drive In addition to a newspaper, Willow Glen residents probably found an empty sack on their doorstep Nov. 8, waiting to be filled with food. The Boy Scouts of America embarked on a countywide food drive to make sure no one goes hungry this holiday season. Eleven thousand Boy Scouts helped drop off empty bags Nov. 8 and will pick them up on Nov. 15. Scouts hope their all the bags will come back full. Last year, 65,000 pounds of food were collected, and this year the group is shooting for 75,000 pounds. Residents who didn't receive a bag can contribute by dropping off food at the Second Harvest Food Bank on Curtner. "Scouting teaches young people to get involved and to care for their community," said Steven O'Connor, volunteer chair for the event. "Collecting food puts those principles into action." The food drive is co-sponsored by Boy Scouts of America and the Santa Clara County Council, a countywide organization dedicated to educating youth. --Cecily Barnes Hope Rehabilitation needs used clothes Now San Jose residents have another place they can drop off their used goods. Only the flowers at this shop don't die after a week or two, they last a lifetime. "We may be getting into fresh flowers eventually, but at this time we sell exquisite flowers made of silk, parchment, latex and foam," owner Laura Augusta said. "These flowers look new for a long, long time." Before opening the shop, Augusta arranged large floral designs for hotels including the Hilton and Embassy Suites. "What I'm trying to do with the store front is open it up for the general public," Augusta said. "I'm offering free in-store design assistance, so people can bring in their favorite container and we'll help them at no charge." In addition to "permanent" flowers, L'Agusta Floral Designs sells gifts, candles, tapestries, pillows, ornaments and baskets. The store also features some hard-to-find, unique floral items such as the Japanese fantail pussy willow. L'Augusta Floral Designs is located at 1000 Lincoln Ave. at the corner of Lincoln and Coe. --Cecily Barnes
