    San Jose Council renames airport

The San Jose City Council approved the renaming of the San Jose International Airport to the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport in a 10-1 vote Nov 6.

Mayor Ron Gonzales proposed the renaming this summer as a way to acknowledge former San Jose Mayor Norm Mineta's contributions to the area. Mineta is now President Bush's secretary of transportation.

The council approved the decision following much local debate about the appropriateness of naming a landmark in an already-obscure area after a public official who continues to carry much political clout. District 4 City Council member Chuck Reed was the sole member to oppose the proposal.

Gonzales said the renaming of the airport was "timely and appropriate."

Although the airport's name will change, the airport identification code "SJC" will remain the same.

Side streets receive additional stop signs

As of Nov. 1, the intersection of Johnston and Byerley avenues became a four-way stop when two new stop signs were added through neighbors' efforts.

Stephanie Landers, a Johnston Avenue resident, said speeding on the street was a major concern, with drivers cutting through the neighborhood from larger streets.

She called District 6 City Councilman Ken Yeager and asked for a meeting. Yeager met with neighbors in August as part of an effort to implement the city's new traffic-calming measures.

Landers said the city responded very quickly after speed counters were set up and the neighbors reported speeders.
