WGHS buys equipment with funds from Pepsi
San Jose Unified School District's board of education approved Willow Glen High School's plans to use the money they received from Pepsi to buy much needed sports equipment on Nov. 2.
The school plans to use $16,770 of the money for new wrestling mats, soccer goals, a high jump pit and a portable scoreboard, said school board trustee Carol Myers.
"Thank God we've got this kind of money available," Myers said. She said the only way the school would be able to afford these items was through the money the school district received from Pepsi.
About a year ago, the district signed a contract with Pepsi to allow the beverage company exclusive rights to place drinks machines on middle and high school campuses, Myers said. In exchange, the schools with the machines receive a percentage of the profits generated by the sales at their school.

Water district honors WGNA for creek work
The Santa Clara Valley Water District will honor the Willow Glen Neighborhood Association for its work to improve the stretch of the Los Gatos Creek Trail from Blackford Elementary School to Meridian Avenue.
The association is one of two groups receiving a plaque on Nov. 21, for their participation in the water district's Adopt-a-Creek program, said water district spokesman Mike DiMarco. Members of the program clean the creeks and maintain the trail along their adopted stretch at least once a year, he said.
"It's a great service. We just don't have the resources to do it ourselves," DiMarco said.
DiMarco said that the neighborhood association, which has been a creek sponsor since 1996, did more than was required by the program, writing grants to rebuild the trail and add new plants.
"They've gone beyond what the normal Adopt-a-Creek group does," he said. "We like to recognize work well done."
Blackford Elementary School will also receive the award for their work along the trail from Bascom Avenue to the school.

Gonzalez reelected to seat on school board
Current San Jose Unified School Board president Jorge Gonzalez, representing Trustee Area 1, won last week's election against challenger Roy Que-Heath. Gonzalez received 84.6 percent of the votes in the trustee area.
Three of the five school board trustees were up for election this year, but only Gonzalez ran a contested race. Trustee Area 5 and board vice president Gary Rummelhoff, as well as Trustee Area 3 representative Carol Myers were unopposed for the positions they now hold, and their names did not appear on the ballot. Willow Glen falls in Trustee Area 3.
Board trustees are elected to four-year terms of office. Trustees in Areas 2 and 4 will be up for election in November 2002.
