    Barnes, Panther pair at CCS center court

    Pioneer's Kimmie Barnes will be on the court in singles action and Presentation's Elizabeth Sanchez and Elisabeth Ewing will be serving it up in doubles play when the Central Coast Section individual tennis tournament gets under way on Nov. 20 at the Courtside Tennis Club in Los Gatos.

    Singles and doubles play begins at noon on Monday with the quarter-final round to be played later the same day. Winners return to the courts on Nov. 21 for the semifinals at noon, with the first- and third-place matches to follow the same day at Courtside.

    Barnes opens up Monday at noon against No. 8-seed Colette Chau of Piedmont Hills, and Sanchez and Ewing open at the same time against No. 4-seed Connie Chang and Serena Lin of Saratoga.

    Lena Sherbakov of Los Altos is seeded No. 1 in singles play with Amy Walgembach of Santa Catalina second, Liora Gelblum of Monta Vista third, Lejla Hodzic of Pinewood fourth, Mio Fukushima of Stevenson fifth, Ashley Lipton of Menlo sixth, Nancy Mok of Menlo seventh and Chau eighth.

    In doubles play, the top seeded teams are: No. 1-- Jenny Renfer-Amanda Nicks, Santa Catalina; No. 2-- Andrea Carloni-Nyra Davoudi, Leland; No. 3-- Claire Najour-Megan Kawakami, St. Francis; No. 4-- Saratoga's Chang-Lin; No. 5-- Lia Gilles-Ade Omedele-Lucien, Stevenson; No. 6-- Ginny Brito-Jennifer Gephart, Monterey; and No. 7-- Megan Martin-Krissy Justice, Palo Alto.

    In the CCS team tournament, Presentation lost its first match 5-2 to Mills to finish its season at 14-6.

    Girls Volleyball

    Presentation opened the CCS Division III volleyball tournament with a 15-11, 15-7, 15-1 win over Notre Dame of Belmont to advance to the semi-final round this week.

    The Panthers, 30-7 for the year, will St. Ignatius (30-7) on Nov. 16, 6 p.m., at Leland High School in the semi's. The winner will meet the Los Gatos (19-9)-Harbor (21-9) winner in the CCS championship match on Nov. 18, 4:30 p.m., at West Valley Community College in Saratoga.

    Lynzy Caton hammered down 12 kills and Julie Harris drilled eight for the Panthers in the win over Notre Dame.

    Amie Pfeiffer and Taylor Rayfield are other top players who will lead the Panthers into the semi-final round this week.

    Cross Country

    Adrianna Morici of Presentation finished 19th overall in the CCS Division III girls cross country finals held last Saturday at Crystal Springs in Belmont.

    The junior ran 20:29 to win a place in the top 20 for the Panthers. Morgan Brown of Presentation was 46th in 22:15 with Alison Williams 59th in 22:53, Lalen Jalilian 60th in 23:03, Amanda Williams 63rd in 23:05, Sarah Phillips 73rd in 23:50 and Karen Krouse 80th in 24:57.

    Willow Glen's Jennifer Cook finished 50th in the CCS Division II girls race. The sophomore ran 21:16 for the Rams.

    Freshman Ngoan Phan ran 17:19 to finish 51st overall in the CCS Division II boys finals for Willow Glen.

    The Rams ended up 14th as a team with Nathan Tom 83rd in 18:12, Alex Leatherman 86th in 18:16, Rich Folk 116th in 20:16 and Will Howsmon 117th in 20:22.
