Plan would create 133 new units in community for seniors
Council approves $8.4 million loan to the developer
By Kate Carter
Two senior housing developments for Willow Glen Way have been approved by the planning department. The projects are located on the northeast corner of Willow Glen Way and Northern Road and the southwest corner of Willow Glen Way and Almaden Road.
"The developers wanted to do a project to upgrade the neighborhood," Eddow said.
The projects are owned and being developed by The Related Companies of California, a company that specializes in building affordable family and senior housing. The two sites will be managed together by The Related Management Company, which is affiliated with Related Companies.
The 1.8 acre-Northern Road site faces a residential neighborhood and is now the location for a warehouse and some older buildings. The site at Almaden Road is a 1.3 acre-vacant lot.
The project will provide a total of 133 low- and medium-income residential units in an independent living community, Eddow said. Residents in the one- and two-bedroom units will also have access to planned amenities such as lounges, exercise rooms, Jacuzzi and spa and TV theater rooms, said Steve Wraight, project manager with Related Companies.
Each development will have an outdoor plaza equipped with a fountain, shade structure and barbecue, Wraight said.
"The concept is to provide affordable housing that is decent," he said.
"The goal is to dispel the myth that low-income housing is cheap," Eddow added.
Neighbors near the development sites were supportive of the plans for the senior complexes at the two neighborhood meetings, they said.
"It was one of the most positive neighborhood meetings I've ever been to," Wraight said.
"The neighbors wanted the development because the seniors will improve the neighborhood," Eddow said.
Last week, the city council approved an $8.4 million city loan to the developer for the project.
"The city planning department and the city have policies that encourage these types of projects," Eddow said.
The two projects received the necessary planned development permit from the city in June, said Eddow. Wraight said he expects to receive the building permits by the end of the month.
"We're going to start [construction] as soon as the weather allows us to," Wraight said. He said they expect to finish the projects by the end of next year.
