Willow Glen hockey team falls to Gatos
By Dick Sparrer
Los Gatos will advance to the semifinals of the Central Coast Section field hockey championships ... Willow Glen won't.
And it all came down to penalty strokes.
The two hockey powers battled to a 2-2 draw in the CCS quarterfinals last Saturday. But the tie had to be broken, so it was decided on penalty strokes.
Nikki Anderson knocked one in for Los Gatos, but Stacey Santomauro matched it for the Rams.
Heather Kottmeier broke the tie for good, though, when she knocked in her penalty shot to give the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage and the victory.
Gatos will now advance to the CCS semi's on Nov. 16, 1 p.m., against Mitty, with Prospect, a 3-0 winner over Monta Vista last weekend, meeting St. Francis at 2:45 p.m. the same day at Los Gatos. The two winners return to LG on Nov. 20, 11 a.m., to play for the CCS championship.
The Wildcats and Rams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half last Saturday, then matched goals in the second half.
Rachel Lichte and Courtney Christiansen each scored off assists from Cortney Kelly to account for the two Los Gatos goals.
Colleen Wozny, a top scorer for the Willow Glen girls soccer team over the past two years, knocked in both goals for the Rams off assists from Ali Lake and Kellie Arnone.
The deadlock set the stage for the penalty stroke tiebreaker.
Willow Glen had opened the tournament with a tight 1-0 win over Del Mar. Lake scored off a Jenny Holt assist in the first half to lead the Rams to the victory.
The Rams finished the year with a solid 9-5-3 record and among the top eight teams in CCS.
Willow Glen earned its place in the playoffs with a couple of hard-fought wins the week before the CCS event.
The Rams edged Saratoga 2-1 in the final game of the regular season, then nipped St. Ignatius 1-0 in the CCS wild card game.
Arnone and Santomauro each scored goals and Janie Demkowski and Lara Covey added assists to lift the Rams to the tight win over the Falcons.
A second-half goal by Gina Tabbara off a Lake assist helped the Rams pull out the 1-0 thriller over SI.
Shannon Donovan, Courtney Miller, Emily Kane, Samantha Bruni, Janae LoPresti, Desirae Dagnino, Lindsey Rovai, Leigh Sager, Nicole Leader, Monica Butler and Lisa Hunter were other members of the team coached by Peggy Booth.
Volleyball
Linzey Sanford led the Presentation girls volleyball team to an easy 15-0, 15-3, 15-2 victory over Independence in the first round of the CCS Division I playoffs.
The Panthers, 33-3, will now face Monta Vista on Nov. 18, 8 p.m., in the semifinals at Santa Clara High School, with the winner to advance to the championship match on Saturday, 7 p.m., at West Valley Community College.
Willow Glen lost in the first round of the CCS Division II tourney, falling 15-1, 15-6, 15-2 to St. Francis. The Rams ended the year at 15-6.
