Airport officials: Show up early, don't drive
Nov. 22 is the busiest travel day of the year at San Jose International Airport.
That's what airport officials are saying, and they are trying to get the word out that Thanksgiving travelers should allow for extra time to make their flights and avoid taking more cars to a location that will certainly be congested.
"We really are encouraging people to just not drive their cars to the airport," airport spokesman Steve Luckenbach said.
Travelers should plan to arrive at least two hours prior to their scheduled departure time, and expect delays.
Parking will be extremely limited, Luckenbach said. He recommended that airport travelers get a ride, call a cab or shuttle service, take public transportation or take advantage of the two airport drop-off locations. Free shuttles will take passengers from Brokaw Road off Coleman Avenue and Airport Boulevard at the Airport Warehouse to the terminals every 10 minutes from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Nov. 22.
"I highly recommend everyone using the Brokaw drop-off point because you don't get on to Airport Boulevard and you're not being pulled into airport traffic," Luckenbach said.
He also said Willow Glen residents might want to take the Airport Flyer shuttle from the Santa Clara Caltrain station across from the Alameda entrance to Santa Clara University right to the terminals. The Flyer runs every 10 minutes from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. from both the Santa Clara station and the Metro Airport Light Rail Station Metro Avenue off N. First Street.
Luckenbach said they expect about 200,000 travelers to use the airport from Nov. 22 to Nov. 26.
"This is the largest travel period of the year, bar none," he said. "Please don't drive to the airport."

Library friends hope to beautify entrance
Library officials are pleased about the Nov. 7 passage of Measure O, but the Friends of the Willow Glen Library doesn't want to wait to improve the looks of the branch library.
The library organization approved the concept to build a low brick wall set back from the sidewalk along the front of the building at their Nov. 13 meeting, said the branch's senior librarian Maurice Stevenson. The wall would include a raised flowerbed with plants and an irrigation system in the space that is now just dirt, he said.
"We are talking about ways to improve the library, what could help beautify the front of the library, now that the patio is looking so good," Stevenson said.
The back entrance was enhanced this summer by the addition of tiles decorated by children involved in the summer reading program.
Now librarians and library supporters are looking for people to build the wall, plant the flowers and install the irrigation system, Stevenson said. The group hopes to get the project partially or entirely donated.

History San Jose plans events for holidays
San Jose history buffs, or anyone interested in a different holiday shopping experience, can visit History San Jose and see what's on offer in their gift shop.
"There will be shopping, there will be food," said History San Jose spokeswoman Cecilia Clark. "It's different than having the mall experience."
The history park is hosting two free events at their Kelley Park location, both with discounts on gift shop items, snacks, entertainment and artists on hand to share their wares.
Willow Glen Coffee Roasting Company coffee will be available at the Nov. 29 event that lasts from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Authors Jack Douglas and Carolyn Downey will also be autographing their books.
