    Resource handbook for seniors available

The 16th edition of the Senior Handbook, a publication of Information & Referral Services Inc. is available at senior centers and other venues that provide assistance or service to seniors throughout Santa Clara County. In Willow Glen, the Senior Handbook 2000 is available through the Willows Senior Center, 2175 Lincoln Ave.

I&RS has published the Senior Handbook since 1984. The private nonprofit agency formed in 1973 to bring Santa Clara County's people, resources and services together in a way that provides information, support and empowerment to those it serves.

The handbook targets the growing numbers of senior citizens who need various levels of assistance and the adult children who must now care for them or find others to provide care.

The main sections encompass the following topics: food and nutrition, health and wellness, home care and nursing, mental-health services, substance abuse, housing, transportation, emergency services, consumer action, death-related, employment, family support, financial, insurance, legal, tenant/landlord, recreation, senior centers and nutrition sites, volunteer programs, education and civic and community.

The Senior Handbook is free at the Willow Glen location (408.448.6400), or at the I&RS office at 1275 S. Winchester Blvd., Suite A, in San Jose. IR&S requests a $3 donation for books picked up at its office, or $5 for books mailed to individuals' homes. For more information, call 408.345.4532. Information is also available on the Internet at www.iandrinfo.org.

Albanese family is honored at dinner

Sometimes community service pays off. In recognition of their family's generations of service to the community and their continued Bellarmine support, Willow Glen residents Mary Sue and John Albanese were recently honored at the school's annual President's Club Award Appreciation Dinner.

John's mother, Rose, and his father, Joe Albanese, a 1936 Bellarmine graduate, "have been a stalwart presence at Bellarmine for as long as anyone can remember," said Bellarmine president Fr. William H. Muller, S.J.

John graduated from Bellarmine in 1966. Sons Kevin and Chris are also Bellarmine grads, and the couple's youngest son, Phillip, an eighth grader at St. Christopher's, is working toward graduating with its class of 2004.

"The Albanese families have been faithful friends, not just to Bellarmine, but to the many good causes in the Santa Clara Valley," Muller said. "It is a delight to honor such hardworking and dedicated people."
