Salon to donate pecentage of sales

The Peninsula Beauty salon at 1140-4 Lincoln Ave. is joining with six other Bay Area Peninsula Beauty salons on Dec. 1, World AIDS Day, to donate money to fight the deadly condition.

The salon will donate $1 from every KMS product sold during the day to the AIDS Research Consortium in Redwood City. According to Peninsula's Robby Robertson, the consortium was chosen because it "provides compassionate AIDS research education and outreach programs for a culturally diverse society."

YSI receives an education grant

The nonprofit Youth Science Institute has received a $5,000 grant from Intel Corporation to provide science education programs in three Santa Clara County School Districts: San Jose Unified, Alum Rock and Franklin-McKinley.

The YSI operates Science & Nature Centers at Saratoga's Sanborn-Skyline County Park, Los Gatos' Vasona Lake County Park and Alum Rock Park in San Jose. Through these centers, it offers natural science education classes, workshops and hikes for different age groups on topics including animals, birds, ponds, plants, insects, spiders, arthropods, dinosaurs, geology, creeks, ecosystems and Native American history.

Elks Lodge sponsors a scholarship contest

The BPO Elks of the USA is hosting the "Most Valuable Student" scholarship contest. Nearly $2.1 million in college scholarships to a total of 500 high school seniors will be awarded nationwide.

The contest is open to senior high school students, or the equivalent, who are U.S. citizens and residents within the jurisdiction of the BPO Elks of the USA. The deadline is Jan. 15, 1999, and applications must be turned in to the scholarship chairman or secretary of the local Elks lodge. Applications are available on the Elks' Web site and at either local Elks lodges or local high schools.

The AAPA hosts a free holiday dinner

The Asian American Parent Association is hosting a free holiday dinner on Dec. 9 for new immigrant families to celebrate and experience American holiday traditions.

Festivities will include a professionally catered meal featuring a traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

The event takes place at De Anza College's Campus Center on Dec. 9 at 6:00 p.m. Seating is limited, so AAPA requests making a reservation. Call Michelle Hu at 996-1267 or Karen Geefay at 996-7013.

Students collect money for needy

Students from Yavneh Day School in Los Gatos have been busy collecting loose change found in cars and under couch cushions, to give to hurricane victims in Central America.

The "Clean out Your Cars and Couches for coins for Central America" program has generated more than $335. The K-5 students began collecting money at the end of September and plan to give their coins to the local chapter of the American Red Cross after Thanksgiving.
