Medica is Heisman candidate
By Dick Sparrer
Jim Plunkett, Archie Griffin, Tony Dorsett, Bo Jackson, Tim Brown, Desmond Howard ... the names of former Heisman Trophy winners are synonymous with the greats in the game of football.
But for the past seven years, the name Heisman has transcended college football.
Wendy's, in cooperation with the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Downtown Athletic Club of New York (home of the Heisman Memorial Trophy since 1935), has created the High School Heisman, presented each year to an outstanding male and female high school student.
Students are selected for academic achievement, athletic accomplishments and community commitment.
Eventually, 12 national finalists will be selected and invited to attend the Heisman Memorial Trophy festivities from Dec. 7 to 10 at the New York Downtown Athletic Club.
Local athletes among the nominees for the prestigious award include Kenneth Rhow and Amanda Wise of Saratoga, Sunnyvale's Jeff Hutchison and Shannon Liang of Wilcox, and San Jose's Cathron Clements and Randall Sessler of St. Lawrence Academy, Katherine Rainey of Prospect, Kimberly Medica of Presentation, Jessica Mumper of Del Mar and Mike Koontz of Mitty.
