Campbell sets his sights on Senate

After months of speculation, Willow Glen's Republican Rep. Tom Campbell recently announced his campaign to win the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Dianne Feinstein.

The race could pit Campbell against Feinstein; first, however, he must defeat entrepreneur Ron Unz and other Republican candidates in the primary election.

Campbell, a Stanford University law professor, has positioned himself as a social moderate and fiscal conservative who often votes against party lines; he supports the environment, gun control and gay and abortion rights.

This campaign is Campbell's second try at a U.S. Senate seat. Elected to the House in 1989, Campbell ran and lost in the Republican Senate primary in 1992.

What's good for the goose is good for all

Give the gift of goose this holiday season. World-renowned author/illustrator Rosemary Wells will preview Here Comes Mother Goose on Dec. 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Like her previous collaboration with anthologist Iona Opie, the book, written for ages 2 to 7, presents a richly illustrated collection of more Mother Goose favorites. Wells' illustrations are colorful and cuddly. It's a generous companion (more than 100 pages) to My Very First Mother Goose (for ages 1 to 6).

Co-sponsored by Hicklebee's and Mariposa Pre School, prizes and give-aways will be presented throughout the evening. The church is at 1550 Meridian Ave. Tickets are $5 at the door. For more information, call Hicklebee's, 408.292.8880.

Prep school welcomes families at open house

Parents interested in a private Catholic education for their sons in grades 9 to 12 can attend a free open house at Bellarmine College Prep on Dec. 5.

The Jesuit-run school for boys will offer campus tours and provide information on its curriculum and extracurricular activities. The school boasts 12 varsity sports and an enrollment of 1,370, with students hailing from Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda and Santa Cruz counties. Founded in 1851 by the Society of Jesus, Bellarmine will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2001.

The school is at 850 Elm St. The open house runs from 11 to 2 p.m. For more information, call 408.292.9224.
