Presentation wins CCS volleyball title

Pamela Chung of Presentation and the doubles team of Liz Yu and Cari Nicholson of Monta Vista finished the fall tennis season in similar spots--third in the Central Coast Section.

Chung won three of four matches to nail third in the girls' singles tournament at the Courtside Tennis Club in Los Gatos, and the Yu-Nicholson team also won three of four matches to finish third in the doubles tourney.

Chung handled the talented Marilyn Mok of Menlo 6-2, 6-2 in the CCS third-place match. The Presentation standout opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cheryl Gomez of Gilroy, then whipped Camille Behnke of Saratoga 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

Chung lost a 6-2, 6-4 nod to Michelle Forrest of Castilleja in the tourney semi-finals, but she fought back for the easy win over Mok to clinch third place.

Behnke opened the tourney with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Justine Liberato of El Camino before losing in the quarters to Chung.

Kimmy Barnes of Pioneer fell to Mok 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and Forrest edged Leora Gelblum of Monta Vista 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a tough first-round match. Belinda Rungsea of Lynbrook lost her first match 6-2, 6-1 to Denise Koller of Soquel.

Yu and Nicholson starred for the Matadors at the CCS tourney. The Monta Vista pair pulled out a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) thriller over Tera Birhan and Alana Glendinning of Soquel in the third-place match.

The Matadors had opened the tournament with a tough 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 win over Maren Thomas and Magda Hayes of Palo Alto, then beat Amanda Wise and Angi Chua of Saratoga 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. The Mats lost 6-1, 6-1 to Alison Dohrmann and Nancy Mok in the semifinals, but came back with the tough win a match later to secure third place.

Wise and Chua had opened the tourney with a win over Roxanne Canent and Shangrila David of South San Francisco before dropping the three-set heartbreaker to Yu and Nicholson a match later.

Service leads Mitty

J.T. Service helped the Mitty boys' cross country team to a surprise fourth at the 1998 California State Division III cross country finals at Woodward Park in Fresno last weekend.

Service, a Willow Glen resident, finished 32nd in 16:34 to help the Monarchs run up a low 142 points to finish fourth behind St. Francis (66), Don Bosco Tech (93) and Redwood-Larkspur (125) in the 14-team Division III field. South Hills (143) finished just a point behind Mitty.

Booker Tynes was the top finisher for the unranked Monarchs, running 21st in 16:21. Service, whose father is the cross country coach at Leland, was 32nd, with Lucas Crowley 33rd in 16:36, Kevin Drumm 69th in 17:06, Jason Crowley 76th in 17:15 and Jesse Burson 87th in 17:26.

The Crowley brothers and Burson are also Willow Glen residents.

Panthers win CCS

The Presentation girls volleyball team pulled out a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Los Gatos to claim the CCS Division III championship.

The Panthers turned back Sacred Heart Cathedral 15-8, 13-15, 16-14, 15-12 in a tough four-game match to set up the title bout with Los Gatos.

Presentation lost two straight games to the Wildcats, falling 15-6, 15-9, and faced elimination with one more loss. But the Panthers fought back with 15-9, 15-10 wins to tie the match at two games apiece, then won it with a thrilling 16-14 victory over Los Gatos in the fifth and deciding game.

The Panthers improved to 26-10 for the year with the victory, and Los Gatos slipped to 22-9.

Valley vs. Palma

A week after beating Willow Glen in the first round of the CCS Division IV play-offs, the San Lorenzo Valley football team dropped a 7-0 decision to Palma to fall out of the field.

Palma will now meet Valley Christian for the CCS Division IV championship on Dec. 5, 7 p.m., at San Jose City College. Valley beat Terra Nova 28-0 last weekend.

The Warriors, ironically, lost 19-14 to Willow Glen in the regular season as the Rams went on to share the championship in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League with Santa Teresa.
