Council approves bond for ballot
A $159 million public safety bond was by approved the San Jose City Council for the March 2002 election.
The purpose of the bond is to upgrade the city's 911 communication center, the San Jose fire stations, neighborhood police centers and police and fire training facilities. Forty-two million dollars will go to build 10 new fire stations and upgrade the existing stations.
Annual tax payments on property valued at $200,000 are estimated at $23.30.

The holiday spirit arrives in San Jose
A wealth of holiday activities and events are running in downtown San Jose throughout the holiday season.
The Paseo de San Antonio is the site of a $2-a-ride ferris wheel and tot train, operating from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., as well as live music and street performances from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m, all sponsored by the San Jose Redevelopment Agency.
The Downtown for the Holidays Boutique, which debuted last year, returns to the glass kiosk across from the San Jose Repertory Theater, 101 Paseo de San Antonio at San Carlos Street, and offers merchandise from nine local arts and culture groups.
The Extreme Networks Downtown Ice Skating Rink at Market and La Viola streets and Christmas in the Park at Plaza de Cesar Chavez at Market and Park avenues also return this year.

Schools prepare for disasters
On Nov. 28, school officials attended a special training session on emergency preparedness. San Jose police, fire and public health experts in disaster, bio-terrorism and health hazards spoke to school officials.
Also at the meeting was California Security Advisor George Vinson, who discussed the state's current efforts to help protect California communities.
The training session was called by Mayor Ron Gonzales after school officials voiced their concerns about the ability to manage potential terrorist threats after the attacks of Sept. 11.

Theater company to hold auditions
Easy Street Theatre Company is holding auditions for a March 2002 performance of Pride and Prejudice, directed by Becky Wilding, at the CET Theater in downtown San Jose.
Auditions run through Dec. 15. The company needs male and female actors age 23 through 65 and older. Please prepare a two-minute monologue and be prepared to read from a script. To schedule an audition appointment, call 408.236.2129.

Musical theater to show 'Annie'
The Children's Musical Theater of San Jose presents Annie at the Montgomery Theater, 291 S. Market St., through Dec. 16.
Future performances are as follows: Dec. 12 at 7 p.m., Dec. 13 at 7 p.m., Dec. 14 at 1:30 and 7 p.m., Dec. 15 at 12, 4, and 8 p.m. and Dec. 16 at 1 and 5 p.m.
The production is directed by Kevin R. Hauge and features local children and alumni performing in the modern American classic.

Opera comes to Bahá'í Center
Willow Glen's Bahá'í Center, 945 Willow St., is hosting lyric soprano Susanna Tchoubarian who will be performing a selection of operatic arias by Mozart and Puccini and art songs by Russian and Armenian composers Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
The Russian-born Armenian singer graduated from the Rachmaninoff Conservatory in Rostov-on-Don, performed in their lyric opera and philharmonic and was invited to the United States by the San Francisco Opera in 2000. She has performed the leading roles in Carmen, La Boheme, Eugene Onegin, Rigoletto and La Traviata.

WG movie screening open to the public
A public showing of a movie made by a teacher and students at Willow Glen High School last spring will be held at Century 21 theater, 3161 Olsen Drive, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m.
English teacher Mike Andres and his students Max Knies and Seth Andrews filmed Kidschool at locations in Willow Glen and elsewhere, using the acting and production talents of other Willow Glen students and residents. The movie is not appropriate for young children.

San Jose approves grants for nonprofits
Ten organizations will received a total of $300,000 from the city of San Jose to improve services for homeless families and individuals.
The grants will help community organizations respond to the various needs that the homeless experience, including assistance in moving to permanent housing, rental deposits and support services.
The agencies receiving the initiative funds include three Willow Glen or near-to-Willow Glen organizations: the Emergency Housing Consortium, InnVision and Sacred Heart Community Services.
