Macchi is named senior of the year

Pioneer wasn't supposed to win the football championship in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this fall.
But someone must have forgotten to tell Mike Wiens.
The talented senior running back rushed for over 1,000 yards to lead Pioneer to a 6-0 record and to the championship in the division--that after the Mustangs had been picked to finish last in the Santa Teresa race prior to the start of the year.
For his efforts, Wiens was named the most valuable player in the division when the league's coaches got together to pick their all-league team for the 1999 season.
Wiens topped a list of special-honors winners that included teammates Brian Davis and Jacob French; Del Mar's Dan Egger, Jeff Berger and Heavi Williams; Prospect's Jordan Williams and Saladin Washington; Willow Glen's David Macchi; and Aaron Williams and Darnell Warren of Piedmont Hills.
Wiens covered 1,159 yards in 122 carries during the regular 10-game season to lead all runners in the division. He also led the league in scoring with 20 touchdowns.
Davis, who hauled in 34 passes for 506 yards, was selected as the league's outstanding receiver and French, who supported Wiens with 421 yards on 67 carries, was named the sophomore of the year.
Prospect's J. Williams won the outstanding offensive back award in the league. The senior quarterback completed 59 of 112 passes for 1,351 yards for the Panthers.
Washington was named the league's junior of the year after an outstanding season. The speedy back rambled for 1,088 yards on 167 carries and scored 12 touchdowns.
Seniors Egger and Berger joined junior H. Williams as Del Mar players ranked among the special players.
Egger was named the outstanding lineman in the division and Berger was picked the outstanding linebacker after leading the league with 100 tackles.
H. Williams was selected as the junior of the year after rambling for an impressive 797 yards on 157 carries for the Dons.
Macchi, a regular on the all-league squad for the past few years, represented Willow Glen among the honored players. The senior quarterback was picked as the senior of the year after hooking up on 108 of 217 passes for 1,475 yards.
For Piedmont Hills, A. Williams was named the outstanding defensive lineman and Warren was picked as the outstanding defensive back.
Winning places on the all-league first team offense were: receivers--junior A.J. Bolden of Independence, senior Will Rideau (30 catches, 568 yards) of Willow Glen; quarterback--junior Jason Campbell (70 of 124 for 1,098 yards) of Del Mar; running backs--senior Leon Thomas (1,066 yards on 138 carries) of Willow Glen, junior Victor Jones (705 yards on 122 carries) of Piedmont Hills, senior Donald Austin of Prospect; offensive linemen--senior Jeremiah Evans of Prospect, senior Ben D'Antonio of Willow Glen, and juniors Josh McDonnell and Steve LaRussa of Pioneer; tight end--senior Ben Holmes of Westmont.
Earning berth on the all-league first team defense were: linemen--junior Jerry Walker of Del Mar, junior Nick DaValle of Pioneer, senior David Inda of Piedmont Hills, senior Travis Gorman of Prospect; linebackers--senior Landers Niven of Pioneer, senior James Rumohr of Independence, junior Andy Rodriguez (96 tackles) of Piedmont Hills; backs--junior Dan Scheffer of Pioneer, senior Andrew Heling (six interceptions) of Prospect, junior Chris McSwain of Del Mar.
