SJ garbage pickup changed for holidays

Just when you remembered which day to put out the trash can, San Jose's schedule of garbage collection will change for two weeks during the holiday season.

From Dec. 25 to Jan. 6, garbage, recycling and yard trimmings collection will take place one day after the normal collection day. Normal garbage collection will resume on Jan. 8.

In addition, the city will collect natural and flocked Christmas trees from Dec. 26 to Jan. 29, if all tree stands, decorations and tinsel have been removed. Flocked trees do not require an extra garbage sticker.

Avoid the 13 effort kicks off in San Jose

Bay Area law enforcement agencies are serious when they say, "Don't drink and drive."

On Dec. 15, 84 law enforcement agencies in the Bay Area, including the San Jose Police Department, ran 10 sobriety checkpoints to kick off a 19-day crackdown on the holiday's intoxicated drivers.

The effort to prevent drunk driving accidents and death will include a total of 28 checkpoints in Santa Clara, Alameda, San Mateo and Contra Costa counties. Teams of multi-agency police officers will conduct 11 nights of regional patrol. CHP officers will conduct intense patrol of the area's highways from Dec. 22 to Dec. 26, and from Dec. 29 to Jan. 1. In addition, departmental officers will be working additional overtime hours.

Law enforcement officials anticipate arresting 2,000 DUI suspects, about 800 of whom will be in San Jose.
