Rams tie the 76ers, then blast Del Mar
By Dick Sparrer
Sue Parisi wasn't exactly pleased with the way her Willow Glen boys soccer team opened the league season.
But the Rams more than made up for a sluggish opener with a rousing 7-1 victory over Del Mar a game later.
Willow Glen opened the season in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League with a 1-1 tie against Independence. But the Rams got on the winning track a game later against the Dons.
Jose Diaz knocked in two goals, and Saul Villatoro, Rudy Ochoa, Hugo Sigala, Juan Rivera and Oscar Garcia added a goal each in the 7-1 league win over Del Mar last week.
Sigala and Daniel Villafuerte had two assists apiece in the Willow Glen win.
Garcia had scored off a Diaz assist for Willow Glen's lone goal in the tie against Independence to open the league season. Villafuerte also played well against the 76ers.
The Rams, 6-1-3 for the year, had finished off the preseason by beating Saratoga 5-0 and Pioneer 1-0.
"We were 5-1-2, which is very good for us," said Parisi. "Last year we were 1-7."
Goalkeeper Christian Jimenez recorded the shutouts in the goal against the Falcons and Mustangs.
It was an unassisted goal by Villafuerte that sparked the Rams to the win over Pioneer.
Diaz had two goals, and Garcia, Osbi Gonzales and Villatoro each scored in the win over the Falcons. Ochoa and Rivera had two assists apiece in the win, and Michael Lawrence added one.
Rams split
The Willow Glen girls split in the first week of the league season. The Rams opened Santa Teresa Division play with a 2-1 win over Valley Christian, but lost 1-0 to Piedmont Hills later in the week. Colleen Wozney and Lindsey Rovai each scored goals to lead the Rams to the win over the Warriors.
Willow Glen is now 1-1 in league play and 4-1 for the year.
Panthers win
The Presentation girls rolled to two big wins last week in the Mt. Hamilton Division, crushing Lincoln 5-0 and whipping Independence 3-1.
Megan Chimenti had a goal and an assist to lead the Panthers to the 5-0 win over the Lions. Jaime Moore, Jennifer Tuttle, Aubrey Ellzey and Stacey Ravizza also scored goals in the win, and Kelly Sweitzer, Rachel Field and Allison Berthold had two assists each.
Sweitzer scored two goals, and Moore added one in the 3-1 win over the 76ers. Tuttle added two assists and Bethold had one.
The Panthers are now 5-2-2 for the year and off to a 2-0 start in the division.
