Rams rally to beat Lynbrook
Busy Christmas week for Willow Glen girls
By Dick Sparrer
Christmas week is a busy time for everyone.
But no one was any busier than Willow Glen basketball coach Daphne Brownson.
Not only did she have to prepare for the annual festivities of December the 25th, she also had to prepare her Rams for three nonleague basketball games.
Willow Glen spent the first week of winter break battling Gunderson, Palo Alto and Lynbrook in three games in preparation for the upcoming season in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
The Rams won one of the three games, edging Lynbrook 51-49 on Thursday, to improve to 3-8 for the year.
Senior sensation Kelly McCloskey led the Rams to the win over the Vikings, pumping in 18 points to lead the Willow Glen effort.
Mary Bennett supported McCloskey with 12 points and Melissa Allen joined the two in double digits with 10 points.
Shannon Donovan chipped in with four points, Bianca Gomez canned a three-pointer and Theisha Rush and Cynthia Salinas added two apiece.
Willow Glen led 17-9 at the first buzzer, but the Rams were outscored 18-8 in the second to trail 27-25 at the half. Lynbrook upped its lead to 44-36 after three quarters, but the Rams managed to overcome the eight-point deficit by topping the Vikings 15-5 in the final period to pull out the win.
Bennett pounded in 15 points and Gomez dropped a pair of threes on her way to 10 points, but the Rams lost 56-37 to Gunderson. McCloskey finished with seven points, Rush and Christine Ha had two apiece and Donovan added one.
McCloskey popped 13 points and Allen hit 10, but Willow Glen lost a 64-36 decision to Palo Alto. Gomez hit two threes to finish with six points, Ha, Bennett and Donovan had two points each and Andrea Rojas hit one.
The Rams are now off until they open the league season at Andrew Hill on Jan. 4.
