Rams beat Cats...finally!

Willow Glen fourth at Hopkins Classic, now 5-6 for the year

By Dick Sparrer

Willow Glen only won one game at the Ed Hopkins Classic in Fairfield. But it was a very sweet win, indeed.

The Rams opened the boys basketball tournament with a 68-59 win over rival Los Gatos, and it came after they had lost twice to the Wildcats in tournaments in each of the previous two weekends.

Willow Glen lost to Gatos in the finals of the Westmont Invitational to open the year, and the Rams lost again to the Cats in the finals of the Los Gatos Lions Club Shootout.

The clubs were slated to meet a third time in the opening round of the Hopkins Classic, and the third time turned out to be the charm for Willow Glen.

Senior guard Nich Holt had a big night for the Rams in the win over the Wildcats. Holt had five three-pointers among his nine field goals to lead all Willow Glen scorers with 23 points.

Guy Beahm supported with 19 points and Manny Myers finished with 16 points, including four threes. Ben Fuller joined his three teammates in double figures with 10 points.

The Rams lost a night later to slip into the tournament's third-place game, and they lost that one 46-45 to Alhambra.

Willow Glen jumped out to a 14-11 lead in the first period and led 28-21 at the half, but the Bulldogs battled back to tie it in the third, then won it by a point in the fourth.

Beahm poured in 24 points to lead the Rams, and Fuller had another 10-point night. Holt finished with five points, and Myers and Eric Dean each hit three. Holt, Myers and Dean all canned three-pointers.

Willow Glen slipped to 5-6 for the year with a 59-50 loss to Santa Clara last week in nonleague play.

Fuller led the Rams with 15 points and Beahm added 14. Myers hit a pair of threes on his way to 10 points, and Holt had a three among his nine points. Dave Macchi added two points for Willow Glen.

WG girls basketball

The Willow Glen girls, meanwhile, dropped a 56-31 decision to Santa Clara last week.

Junior Mary Bennett led the Rams with 10 points and Kelly McCloskey added nine. Melissa Allen chipped in with six points, and LaTesha Trumbo, Courtney Livak and Andrea Rojas had two each.

The Rams, 2-6 overall, now look forward to their league opener on Jan. 5, 5 p.m., when they host San Jose in the first game of the season in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Prior to falling to the Bruins, the Rams had beaten St. Lawrence Academy 49-23. McCloskey went for a team-high 17 points in the win. Shannon Donovan, Christine Ha and Bennett supported with six points each. Livak had five, Sandra Corpus and Brigitte Boney four apiece, Trumbo two and Allen one.

Livak was the top scorer for the Rams in a nonleague loss to Los Gatos. The freshman tossed in 10 points in Willow Glen's 47-30 loss to the Cats.

McCloskey tossed in eight points in the game, Allen hit four, Corpus dropped three, Bennett and Rojas had two each and Trumbo added one.

Earlier, the Rams had lost 73-36 to powerful Gunn. Rojas, another WG freshman, led the Rams with 10 points. Corpus and Ha hit five apiece and Ocampo, McCloskey and Bennett each had four. Allen chipped in with two points, and Trumbo and Donovan had a point each.

Panthers win

Sara Warner poured in 20 points to lead the Presentation girls to a 62-43 win over Independence in a nonleague game last week.

The Panthers had finished fifth in the Gator Classic at Sacred Heart with a 49-43 win over Burlingame in their final game.

Presentation earned a place in the fifth-place game with a 55-32 win over St. Mary's. Cheyenne Brown pitched in 13 points, including three three-pointers, to lead the Panthers.

Brown and Warner had seven points apiece in a 59-42 loss to Pinewood a game earlier.

Earlier in the year, Brown had 16 points, and Warner hit 15 to lead Presentation to a 47-38 win over Nordoff.
