Willow Glen well represented in baseball playoffs

(By Dick Sparrer)

Willow Glen wasn't represented in the Central Coast Section (CCS) baseball playoffs this spring ... or was it?

The Rams, in the midst of a rebuilding year with just one senior on the varsity squad, didn't finish high enough in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League to earn a CCS berth.

But that doesn't mean Willow Glen wasn't well-represented at CCS. In fact, three Willow Glen residents, all players from the Lincoln Glen Little League, were pitchers in first-round games in the playoffs.

Will Shaffer of Mitty, Kevin Shull of Bellarmine and Dustin Yoder of Valley Christian were all winners in the opening round of the section tourney.

Shaffer was the winning pitcher for the Monarchs in a 17-7 win over Menlo-Atherton to open the tournament, and Shull tossed a four-hitter for the Bells in a 1-0 win over Fremont.

A day later Yoder picked up the mound win for Valley in a first-round victory over Hillsdale.

The three join with Willow Glen's Doug Dionne and former Rams Matt Durkin and Bobby Hobbs to make a case for the area being a hotbed for area pitching talent.

Durkin has gone on to star on the mound at San Jose State University (SJSU) as a freshman, and Hobbs is a freshman hurler at Pepperdine University.

Along with the pitchers, there are other talented Willow Glen baseball players at the private schools.

At Valley, Yoder is joined by catcher Mike Wittmayer and outfielders Adam Wright and Jimmy Garcia as Willow Glen residents on the squad, and Bellarmine pitcher-outfielder Jason Matucci is another Willow Glen product.

Shull will join Durkin over at SJSU next season, and Shaffer heads to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. Yoder and his three Willow Glen area teammates will return to the diamond for the Warriors next spring when they make the move to the West Catholic Athletic League.

Shull, Shaffer, Yoder, Dionne, Garcia and Wittmayer were all members of the Lincoln Glen Little League senior division team that won the District 12 championship a couple of years back.
