Speak Out

Lincoln High School must raise standards

The principal and faculty of Lincoln High School seem mystified at the uproar over the participation in the mock trial competition of students who had admitted to vandalizing a fellow student's home. As the incident occurred during the holidays, outside of school, they point out that it was not to the school to impose punishment on the kids. True.

However, it was Lincoln High School's decision to select these same students to represent the school on a national stage. Institutions are judged by those they choose as representatives. In my school days, admittedly long ago, the written school policy required students participating in activities on behalf of the school to have not only the requisite skill but also good character. It appears that the faculty and administrators of Lincoln High School wanted to win so badly that they did not consider, or were willing to sacrifice, the school's reputation. The school needs to raise its standards.
