Exercise workshop

The Traffic Safe Communities Network (TSCN) is promoting a workshop called "Overcoming the Stickiest Problem: Getting People to Regularly Walk and Bike," led by Mark Fenton, host of America's Walking on PBS. The purpose of the workshop is to review key issues facing traditional physical activity promotion and to offer insights on linking public health, environmental, transportation, land-use planning and policy-level strategies to make more walkable, bicycle-friendly settings the norm in communities. The network has had the realization that the traditional methods to get people to exercise are not working.

Lack of exercise leads to several chronic diseases and conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, asthma, cancer, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression, leading to more than 200,000 deaths a year in the United States. The workshop will be June 24 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Santa Clara County Office of Education, board room 102, at 1290 Ridder Park Drive in San Jose. The goal of the network is to prevent and control traffic-related fatalities and injuries, as well as reduce health care and property costs through research. The full network meeting will be on June 28 from 3- p.m. to 5 p.m. at the United Way, 1922 The Alameda, room 105, in San Jose. To RSVP for either of the events, or for more information, contact Lisa McFarlane at 408.885.2113.

Volunteers needed

Caltrain is looking for Santa Clara County residents to fill positions on its Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC). The committee is comprised of nine representatives from various parts of the community who provide input on the needs of current and potential transit users. The CAC meets on the third Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m. at Caltrain headquarters in San Carlos. The deadline for applications is June 21. Applications are available at any staffed Caltrain station, the San Mateo County Transit District at 1250 San Carlos Ave. in San Carlos, by calling 650.508.6279 or by visiting www.caltrain.com.

Homeowners rebate

The state Franchise Tax Board's home owners and renters rebate program has raised its eligibility limit again this year, meaning more people will qualify and rebate amounts will be larger. Rebates are for citizens and legal immigrants who are age 62 or over, have disabilities, including blindness, and had a 2001 income of $37,119 or less. One who files before June 30 may qualify to receive the rebate for 2000 with a limit of $35,251, including Social Security income, railroad retirement funds and all other sources of income not usually included in filing income tax statements. Those filing for 2000 can get their forms and receive assistance by calling the Franchise Tax Board at 800.852.5711.

Members of the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program will be available from July 1 to Oct. 15 to assist applicants.
