Runners Up: The Blackhawks of Willow Glen finished second in the boys under-12 division at the recent South Bay Youth Soccer League tournament. By Dick Sparrer It may not be quite up there with the World Cup, but to the players of the South Bay Youth Soccer League (SBYSL) it's just as important. It's the SBYSL tournament, and the Blackhawks of Willow Glen outlasted the United Soccer Club of San Jose to hang on for a solid second-place finish overall in the boys under-12 field. There were more than 100 teams in the tournament, and the three-time champion Blackhawks edged United 1-0 when Jose Morales scored off an assist from Devin Kelly. Talented defenders Joshua Williams and Tye Heidecker teamed with Nicholas Bruno and Adrian Asbun to seal the back line along with goalkeepers John Walsh and Tom Elliott as the Blackhawks nailed the shutout. Kyle Hall and Craig Zeiter were standouts in the midfield, and Luis Correa and Carlos Correa also played well along with Greg Givens and Grant Casados. Zeiter also took a turn in the goal for the winners. The Blackhawks will return to the SBYSL in the fall. Signups for the season are held Saturdays at the Campbell Community Center snack shack, next to the stadium. For more information, call 408.248.8516. |
