Bellarmine senior breaks records A Bellarmine College Preparatory student athlete and a Willow Glen resident, Jihad Beauchman, has broken several records in Bellarmine sports this year. After winning the fifth-place medal in high jump at the state track meet, he broke the Bellarmine record for triple jump and tied the high jump record. He is a recipient of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sportsmanship Award and played on the varsity basketball team at Bellarmine. Beauchman will be attending Yale University in the fall. Aviation security task force recommends tighter security The Silicon Valley Blue Ribbon Task Force on Aviation Security and Technology submitted its final report on technology solutions and concerns to Rep. Mike Honda and San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales on June 17. The task force's recommendations to airport security staffers include strengthening airport and airplane security with video monitoring systems, driver and vehicle authentication and access control. Conservation corps seeks volunteers The California Conservation Corps (CCC) is offering environmental work opportunities to recent high school and college graduates between the ages of 18 and 23. Those interested can sign up for a year of paid work opportunities in the fields of natural resources, emergency response and community involvement. CCC projects include building trails in state parks, landscaping a city playground, improving salmon habitat along the North Coast, planting trees for the U.S. Forest Service and weatherizing a senior citizen's home. Workshops to give advice to grant writers Thirty-three public and private nonprofit agencies will sponsor a series of grant-writing workshops for the general public to attend. These workshops provide information for novice and advanced grant writers on how to identify and write grant proposals to foundations, corporations and the government. County improves youth detention reform Santa Clara county and a countywide planning committee are launching the Juvenile Detention Reform Initiative to eliminate unnecessary and inappropriate detention of youth in the juvenile justice system. The program will be launched with the support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The program seeks to reduce the disproportionate confinement of minority youth. The foundation will provide technical assistance with a $125,000 grant to assist in the implementation of the initiative. The multiyear initiative will take a look at possible changes to court processes and detention procedures that could reduce the number of children in juvenile hall and ranches. Willow Glen local wins competition A San Jose State University student, Sandy Perry, was recently awarded second place in the Tom Knight Professional Undergraduate Paper Competition at the California Geographical Society annual meeting in Loma Pine. Perry, a Willow Glen resident, was awarded $100 for his paper, titled "A Neighborhood Business Area Goes Upscale." The California Geographical Society seeks to enhance the understanding of geography and promote interaction among educators, applied geographers and members of the general public who are interested in geography. Lopez Memorial Plaza marks grand opening The Brenda Lopez Memorial Plaza celebrated its grand opening at 100 Sherman St. in San Jose on June 15. The park/plaza pays tribute to Lopez, a 22-year-old community volunteer and Folklorico dance instructor who died of cancer in 1999. The grand opening celebration included performances by the Folklorico dance group Tezkatlipoka Danza Azteca. |
