Council OKs SNI project

The San Jose City Council voted 10-1 on June 11 to make its 20 Strong Neighborhood Initiative (SNI) areas one project. The Greater Gardner area in northern Willow Glen is one of the SNI areas included in the project.

By making the 20 SNI areas one project, the council and the San Jose Redevelopment Agency can now begin to infuse money into specific neighborhood improvement projects. Its anticipated $300 million will be earmarked in the next five years for SNI improvements. The council has already approved many of the 20 SNI plans. The rest are expected to be approved by the end of the year.

Neighborhood advisory committees in all the SNI areas - which cover a third of the city - have developed ideas and projects specific to the character of the individual neighborhoods.

The initiative is a grass-roots effort involving hundreds of residents, business owners and city staff members who have identified factors that would improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods.

The Greater Gardner SNI area's top goal has been to build a new community center. Funding for a new center was approved and included in a library/parks bond in January of 2002.
