By Juliane Ngan This year's Dancin' on the Avenue festival drew a record number of participants, raising more than $25,000 for the Willow Glen Business and Professional Association (WGBPA). During the association's June 25 general board meeting at Bay View Bank in Willow Glen, board members said that the involvement of the Willow Glen community greatly contributed to the event's success, attracting more than 35,000 people and almost every restaurant on Lincoln Avenue and a dozen corporations setting up booths and helping out with the June 15 festival. "All our feedback was extremely positive," said Cara Finn, co-owner of The Grapevine and WGBPA president. "The attendees really liked all the entertainment," said Valerie Onorato, owner of Q Advertising and WGBPA third vice president. In other news, Katie Goforth, the association's first vice president, has resigned due to personal reasons. Finn said that Goforth's position will not be filled for the time being. The association will be recruiting a new business manager. Anyone interested in the position should email their resume to Finn at carajane@ mindspring.com. The association's goal is to have the position filled by the end of August. In order to solidify WGBPA memberships, Adkins has been working with Jeff Eichenfield, a consultant paid by the city, to update the association's bylaws as well as new-member and associate-member programs. The WGBPA has also taken one of its first solid steps toward setting up a professional website. The association received more than a dozen bids to develop its website and has awarded the project to Kim and Mike Jennett of Kim Jennett Studios. According to Linda Waltrip, second vice president of WGBPA and the new website chairperson, before the developers can begin setting up the website, the association will need to develop an updated membership list, membership listing categories, a calendar of events, a history section, a featured memberships listing and an e-coupon section. "The project is still in the planning stages right now," said Kim Jennett. "So far we know that the website will be very community-based, and there will be a separate section for members." The Jennetts, who live and work in Willow Glen, have more than eight years of experience working with small and large companies, including such notables as Levi Strauss & Co. The association hopes it will have its website set up by Founder's Day, Sept. 8. |
