San Jose's Davis wins Grand Prix title

Top 10, 12 netters in Saratoga tourney

By   Dick Sparrer

There were some surprises, there were some minor upsets and some things went just as expected when the Saratoga Country Club played host to the Junior Open Grand Prix tennis tournament for boys and girls 10 and 12 singles players last week.

The biggest surprise of the tourney came in girls 12 singles play, where unseeded Jocelyn Davis of San Martin won the title with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 2 seeded Samantha Lam of Mountain View.

And there was a mild upset in the boys 12 division when No. 4 seeded William Li of San Jose edged No. 3 seed Emerson Lin of Saratoga 6-2, 6-2 in the finals.

Things went pretty much as expected in the other two divisions. No. 1 seed Adrian Schwarzer of Fremont outlasted No. 2 seed Conor Berg of Greenbrae 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 to take the boys 10 crown, and No. 1 seed Tayler Davis of San Jose topped No. 3 seed Samantha Critser of Mountain View 6-3, 7-5 to win the girls 10 title.

Li and Lin were on a collision course to meet in the boys 12 finals, each player winning in straight sets four times to get into the championship match.

Lin blanked Michael Yan of Chandler, Ariz., 6-0, 6-0, whipped Arthur Phan of Woodside 6-2, 6-0, beat Michael Gu of Saratoga 6-1, 6-0 and handled Eugene Muchynski of Sunnyvale 6-0, 6-4 to get into the last match.

Li countered with wins over Jason Ku of Cupertino (6-2, 6-0), Zachary Buchman of Piedmont (6-0, 6-0), Rohan Mehra of Saratoga (6-0, 6-1) and Sameet Ramakrishnan of Saratoga (6-2, 6-1).

In the title match, it was all Li as he rolled to the straight set win over Lin, 6-2, 6-2.

Muchynski, who had won three straight matches before falling to Lin in the semifinals, went on to beat Ramakrishnan 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 in the third-place match. Ramakrishnan had also opened with three wins before losing to Li.

Ku and James O'Hagan of Saratoga were other winners in the round of 64, and Eric Sum of Cupertino, Ishan Nagpal of Saratoga, Gu, Mehra and O'Hagan each won in the round of 32. Gu and Mehra each won in the round of 16 before falling in the quarterfinals.

Michael Conroy of San Jose and Eric Gast and Andy Horng of Saratoga each lost in the round of 64, but played their way through the consolation bracket to get to the semifinals.

Conroy beat Gast 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the consol semi's before edging Horng 6-2, 7-5 for the consolation championship. Horng had beaten Nicolas Simmons of Los Altos 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Timur Kazimirov of Cupertino, Tan Tran of Los Gatos and Varun Mehra of Saratoga all lost in the round of 64, then lost again in consolation play.

There were no surprises in the girls 10 division. San Jose's Davis was seeded No. 1, and she won four matches - all in straight sets - to claim the title.

Davis beat Malavika Padmanabhan of San Jose 6-1, 6-0, topped Giuliana Olmos of Fremont 6-1, 6-0 and whipped Yanni Dzoan of Milpitas 6-0, 6-1 before taking care of Critser in the finals.

Annie Lee of Saratoga won her first two matches before losing to Critser in the semifinals. Lee came back to face Dzoan in the third-place match, but lost 6-4, 6-1 to wind up fourth overall.

Padmanabhan, Srinidhi Raghavan of Saratoga and Anastasia Glyantseva of San Jose all lost in the first round. Raghavan and Glyantseva came back with wins in consolation play, but Glyantseva lost in the semifinals and Raghavan lost 6-0, 6-0 to Anna Kegulski in the consolation championship match.

In the boys 10 division, David Cappello of Saratoga lost his first match, but then played his way into the consolation finals before losing again.

Cappello opened with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Daniel McCall of San Francisco to fall into the consolation bracket. But he fought back with wins over Anthony Brewer of Sunnyvale (6-1, 6-1), Benjamin Lam of San Francisco (6-3, 6-1) and Nolan Richard of Lafayette (6-0, 6-0) before losing 6-1, 7-6 to Warren Lewis of Pacific Grove in the consolation finals.

Stephen Li of San Jose won a pair of matches, beating Kyle Sum of Cupertino 6-2, 6-0 and Connor Farren of Pleasanton 6-0, 6-2, before losing 6-2, 6-3 to No. 4 seed Stephen Ventimilia of Seaside in the quarterfinals.

Winning first-round matches but then losing in the round of 16 were Reid Patterson of Saratoga and Eric Johnson of San Jose.

Falling in the first round were David Hubbard of Saratoga, Jeffery Ku and Kyle Sum of Cupertino, and Michael Kung and Anthony Brewer of Sunnyvale. Ku came back to win in the consolation round while the others all lost, but then Ku lost in the consolation quarterfinals.

In girls 12 play, Stephany Chang of San Jose and Lindsey Marsh and Zoe De Bruycker all played their way into the quarterfinals before losing.

De Bruycker, Kara Wang and Sarah Rose Cappello of Saratoga and Elizabeth Tackett and Jennifer Kung of Sunnyvale all won matches in the round of 32, but Tackett, Wang, Kung and Cappello all lost in the round of 16. Angela Horng, who drew a first-round bye, also lost.

But Chang, the No. 1 seed in the division, joined De Bruycker and Marsh as a winner in the round of 16 before losing in the quarters.

Saratoga's Haley Hubbard, Tiffany Nguyen, Tarini Ullal and Shireen Gupta and Jennifer Chiu of San Jose all lost in the round of 32 and joined Horng in consolation play. Only Chiu would win a consolation match, where she defeated Gupta 6-1, 6-2, but she lost in the consol semi's.
