By Dick Sparrer The high schools of the area are going to get a crop of pretty good girls volleyball players in the fallat least, if the Vision Volleyball Club's 14 Gold team is any indication. The Gold won the silver in the open division at the USA Volleyball Junior Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, and many of the recent eighth-grade graduates will be headed to local high schools in the fall. Vision's Gold, ranked in the middle of the pack in the 28-team open division at the Junior Olympics, finished in a four-way tie for second after the first two days of competition. The Gold split in two playoff matches the next day to advance in the tournament. The locals fought back after a first-game loss to beat No. 2 seed Asics Munciana 2-1 to advance to the medal round, then beat the Arsel Eagles of Puerto Rico 2-1 to move on to the finals. Again, the Gold lost the first game, then won the next two to win the match. The Gold faced No. 1 seed Borinquen Coqui in the finals and lost a tough 25-20, 25-19 decision to wind up second. Members of the Gold team, coached by Bret Almazon-Cezar and Chi Chui of Mitty, included Lacey Gera (6-foot middle blocker/St. Christopher graduate going to Mitty), Chelsea Amer (Dartmouth/Mitty), Kelly Cave (St. Simon/St. Francis) Shawn Clancy (St. Justin/Mitty), Sheena Donohue (St. Mary's/Mitty), Katie Kirk (Quimby/Mitty), Maile Krauss (Gunn), Whitney Leonard (St. Andrew's eighth-grader), Kelly Schmidt (St. Andrew's/Mitty), Amie Soares (St. Justin/Mitty) and Kelly Wierema (St. Martin/Mitty). Gera, Leonard and Wierema played together for three years with City Beach, finishing fifth in each of the last two years, and Schmidt, Soares and Clancy played for Yahoo, finishing third as 12-year-olds. |
