SJ/Silicon Valley NAACP sets policy on race issues

The San Jose/Silicon Valley branch of the NAACP authored two policy resolutions dealing with racial issues that were unanimously approved by delegates at the July 9 National Convention of the NAACP in Texas.

The first resolution stated that the NAACP would have a strong policy position to always oppose initiatives restricting public agencies and other government bodies from collecting racial demographic data. The second resolution supported HR 2833, the Vietnam Human Rights Act, ensuring that the NAACP would not ignore civil rights violations in Vietnam.

Heat wave reminds customers to start conserving energy

With the intense heat wave California has been experiencing, PG&E and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) are urging Californians to conserve energy. On July 9, the CAISO issued a stage one electrical emergency alert when power reserves fell below 7 percent.

PG&E offers customers the following energy preservation tips to save on cooling costs: set the thermostat at 78 degrees or higher when at home to save 10 to 20 percent of cooling costs; turn the thermostat to 85 degrees or off when away from home to save 5 to 12 percent of costs; turn off the furnace pilot during the non-heating season to save 3 to 9 percent of costs; and provide shading for your air conditioning condenser to save 2 to 3 percent of costs.

To save on operating costs: select the most energy-efficient model of Energy Star-labeled appliances to save 5 to 25 percent of operating costs, and replace incandescent bulbs with fluorescent lamps to save 30 to 38 percent of costs.

To save 7 to 10 percent on lighting costs, PG&E encourages customers to use dimmer switches or timers on lights. To save on water heating costs, wrap your water heater with a water heater blanket to save up to 10 percent of costs, and install low-flow shower heads and faucets or flow restrictors to save 5 to 10 percent of water heating costs. PG&E is also constantly encouraging customers to turn off lights whenever they are not needed. They also encourage businesses to turn off computers, monitors, printers, copiers and lights every night and weekend. Businesses should also retrofit incandescent or fluorescent exit signs with long-lasting, low-energy LED exit signs. Dusty diffusers and lamps should be cleaned every six to 12 months to improve lumen output.
