Salvation Army hosts back-to-school spree

The Salvation Army is encouraging the public to participate in its 10th annual Back-to-School ChildSpree Aug. 10, 7:30 a.m-10 a.m.

Volunteers can participate in the event by becoming a shopping chaperone and helping at least two children shop for school clothes, uniforms and shoes at a local Mervyn's store. For more information contact Liwayway Gimenez at 408.282.1165 ext. 218.

Supervisor Blanca Alvarado wins award

Santa Clara County District 2 Supervisor Blanca Alvarado has received the 2002 Woman of the Year Award from the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Women's Transportation Seminar. The award was presented to Alvarado during the organization's annual award dinner June 13.

The award recognized Alvarado for her leadership in the advancement of women and minorities in the transportation industry. Alvarado has been involved with transportation through her work serving as a board member and chairwoman of the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) since 1998. Alvarado also played a leading role in the development of VTA's priorities for the Governor's Traffic Congestion Relief Plan and advocated for community-oriented design enhancement, and the Comprehensive County Expressway Planning Study to alleviate congestion on San Jose's expressways.

She has also been committed to delivering cost-effective transportation projects and improvements. Alvarado was the first person to envision extending light rail to East San Jose in the Downtown East Valley Light Rail Project. She was the leader of a Transportation Justice Summit last fall educating the community about transportation equity issues and current transportation projects planned for East San Jose.

Make-A-Wish hosts benefit bocce bash

The Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish foundation is hosting its seventh annual Bocce Bash Aug. 10, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., to raise money for children in the Bay Area with life-threatening illnesses.

Participants in the event will be playing five rounds of Italian lawn bowling called bocce ball. The event will also feature prizes, music, and will have Italian food catered by Bucca di Beppo.

The Bocce Bash will take place at Santa Clara University on Stanton Field, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara. For more information contact Shannon Dean, with the Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation, 415.515.4690.

Guadalupe Gardens sponsors a play day

The Guadalupe River Park & Gardens, the City of San Jose and The Sharks Foundation, are sponsoring Play Day in the Park, Aug. 16, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

The event is free and will feature Dr. Doolittle's Puppet Shows and Puppet Petting Zoo and carousel rides for young children. Children can watch Rumplestiltskin at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. or 2 p.m. Between shows, children will be invited to play with puppets under the direction of the Motion Maker Pupeteers.

Children age 10 and under will get one free ride on the children's carousel.

The event will take place at the Arena Green in Guadalupe River Park, at the intersection of Santa Clara and Autumn streets in San Jose. Free parking will be available in the surface parking lots on Santa Clara Street. For more information call 408.277.5998 or visit www.grpg.org.

Women invited to AAUW open house

The San Jose branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) invites interested women to an open house to meet members of the branch. The purpose of the open house is to share information, including the benefits of membership, upcoming events and the history of the organization. All women who hold a degree from a four-year college are eligible for membership.

The event will take place at the San Jose branch's headquarters, located at 1165 Minnesota Ave in Willow Glen, next to the Willow Glen Library.

On Aug. 27, the San Jose branch of the AAUW hosts its annual luncheon and card-playing fundraiser to benefit the educational foundation, which helps women with grants and scholarships return to college after being out of school for awhile.
