Women's Fund honors SJUSD superintendent
The Women's Fund of Silicon Valley awarded
one of its 2002 Woman of Achievement Awards
in the education category to San Jose Unified
School District Superintendent Dr. Linda
Murray.
The Woman of Achievement Awards are awarded
to outstanding female role models who make a
significant impact in their chosen fields.
More than 100 women, representing the arts,
communications, community service, education
and public service, were nominated for the
awards.
Crossroads School teacher and counselor
Elizabeth Bliss was also nominated for her
outstanding work.
The Women's Fund is a nonprofit, nonpartisan
organization whose mission is to recognize
women for their accomplishments. They also
fund nonprofit programs that assist women and
girls and provide them with training and
education that can help them on the road to
becoming women of achievement.
Donations needed to help the poor
The nonprofit Saint Vincent de Paul (SVdP)
Society of Santa Clara County is asking for
assistance in helping the poor, needy and
underserved of Santa Clara County.
The association accepts functional old cars,
clothes and furniture to help provide
transportation and other necessities to
people at a price they can afford. Donations
made to SVdP, which are tax-deductible, will
fund thrift stores with caseworkers who offer
information about food, clothing, rent and
transportation to those in need.
The association has a center that can provide
workers to help those who need assistance on
any yard and construction projects.
SVdP is also encouraging those who need an
extra car to purchase cars priced 25 percent
below blue book value from the association.
Those interested can see the cars at 2040 S.
Seventh St. in San Jose.
For more information, contact the Saint
Vincent de Paul Society of Santa Clara County
at 408.993.9500, email help@svdp.org or
visit www.svdp.org. Those interested in volunteering at SVdP should call 408.298.7290, ext. 18.
Governor signs bills to help victims of violence
Gov. Gray Davis recently signed two bills
authored by 24th Assembly District
Representative Rebecca Cohn (D-Saratoga) that
will help victims of violence.
AB1909 authorizes counties to develop
demonstration projects to identify best
practices in domestic violence cases. AB2252
adds assault with the intent to commit
specified sex crimes to the list of prior sex
offenses that may be admitted in a trial of a
sexual offense to prove the character of the
defendant. It also eliminates the requirement
that the territorial jurisdiction of the
court for specified sex crimes is where the
offense occurred.
Cohn said, "Passage of these two bills
ensures the uniformity and necessary tools to
assist victims in safely navigating the court
system rather than causing them to be
revictimized by the very system that was set
up to protect them."

Hospice of the Valley extends service area
San Jose's Hospice of the Valley (HOV), which
has served Santa Clara County since 1979, has
expanded its service area to include Palo
Alto, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills.
HOV provides compassionate end-of-life care
to terminally ill patients and their loved
ones in those communities. Patients receive
care when curative treatment is no longer an
option and quality of life and dignity
becomes the priority.
The HOV team comprises nurses, social
workers, home health aides, a dietician,
volunteers, a chaplain and a medical
director, all of whom provide care
complementary to that of the patient's own
primary physician.
HOV, a public benefit corporation, provides
the following services: in-home visits; nurse
case management with a call service available
24 hours a day, 7 days a week; pain control
and symptom management; and grief services
for families experiencing a loss.
For more information, contact the Hospice of
the Valley at 408.947.1233 or visit
www.hospicevalley.org.
