Willow Glen resident Esther Cooley, who served as a volunteer for Travelers Aid at the San Francisco International Airport for more than 35 years, died Aug. 6 due to injuries sustained in a car accident.

Cooley had been volunteering on and off at the San Francisco International Airport since 1957. She made it her responsibility to help travelers find final destinations, local hotels, taxicabs and places to eat. Cooley was honored for her volunteer work at the airport in both 2000 and 2001.

Born to the Rev. Hoemann and Sophie Hoemann on Aug. 4, 1921, in Spring, Texas, Cooley soon moved to Battle Creek, Iowa, where she grew up and graduated from Battle Creek High School.

After graduating high school, Cooley attended Iowa State University for two years before obtaining overseas employment working for the government in Wiesbaden, West Germany.

In 1956, Cooley returned to the United States and moved to San Francisco, where she met and married her husband, Don Cooley. She had two daughters, June and Jean, before moving to San Jose in 1966.

In 1977, Cooley once again began the traveling she had enjoyed so much. Eventually she would visit more than 60 countries, including China, where she walked on the Great Wall; India, where she rode elephants; and France, where she enjoyed a balloon ride over the cities and countryside.

Along with her travels, Cooley enjoyed embroidery, collecting stamps from France and attending symphony concerts.

"My mother loved life and made the most out of it," says June Cooley. "She wasn't afraid to try anything, even the things we weren't sure she should do. But she did it and had a wonderful time."

She is survived by her husband, Don Cooley, and daughters June and Jean Cooley. Funeral services have been held. Donations can be made in Cooley's name to the Stanford Medical School Blood Center, c/o Sharon Branaman, 800 Welch Road, Palo Alto, 94304.
