The Flamenco Society of San Jose continues its summer juerga jam sessions with the return of La Romera on Sept. 7 to Le Petit Trianon. Longtime flamenco dance instructor La Romera brings a gypsy flair to her performances, which are accompanied by an additional dancer, singer and guitarist.
The group promises an evening of impromptu song, dance and music that mirrors the flamenco jam sessions made famous in Andalucia, Spain. Traditional juergas in Spain typically last until the late hours of night—this juerga will only last 11/2 hours but is sure to produce the raw emotion that characterize these jam sessions in their native locale.
Like free-form jazz sessions that allow musicians to share the spotlight in a give and take of musical inspiration, flamenco artists in a juergas have the freedom to play off of each other and take any performance in an imaginative direction. Creative expression of both traditional and modern flamenco is expected during this informal concert.
The Flamenco Society of San Jose is celebrating its 20th year of bringing flamenco to the Bay Area. The society's juergas, which take place five times a year, showcase established performers from all over the world, including Argentina, Brazil, India, Mexico and Spain, alongside students of the society's academy and up-and-coming artists.
