It gets pretty hot in Sacramento in the summertime. But it's tough to determine which was hotter recently in the capital city—the sun, or the soccer being played by a couple of local girls under-13 teams.
The De Anza Strykers and the De Anza Force both won titles in tournaments played this summer in Sacramento.
The Strykers breezed to six straight wins to take the California Cup on a hot July weekend in Sacramento, and the Force won the River City United Championship Cup tournament over Labor Day weekend.
The Strykers, who outscored their opponents 12-3 in the six games, blanked the Mustang Fury 2-0 in the semifinals and stopped the California Odyssey 2-0 in the championship game.
Members of the championship team included Lindsey Taylor, Stephanie Righetti, Jessie Lau, Binca Springer, Jenna Brehmer, Sarah Sherwood, Courtney Cook, Sophie Lynn, Sarah Pitzen, Elora Martinez, Nicole Santo, Shannon Righetti, Karina Cavanna, Kelsey Poulsen, Alyssa Boddie, Biance Henniger and Megan Foertsch. The coaches were Steve Righetti and Dave Pitzen, and Bob Joyce was the trainer.
The Force, behind a sensational effort by goalkeeper Gabby Batmani, won the River City tourney over Labor Day weekend.
The girls won their heat to advance to the semifinals on the third day of the tournament; then Batmani really went to work.
The Force met the Rohnert Park Express in the semi's, and the game went into overtime, then was to be decided on penalty kicks. Batmani stopped three penalty shots to help the Force pull out the win and advance to the finals against the Manteca Rangers.
The Rangers had beaten the Los Gatos Locks on penalty kicks to move into the championship game; then the Force and Rangers locked up in a tie through regulation and overtime. Once again, Batmani stopped a penalty try, and the Force went on to claim the win and the crown.
Members of the championship team included Batmani, co-captains Jennifer Nguyen and Kasha Sang, Rosa Ahn, Jenny Kute, Heather LeFevre, Sarah Trankle, Taylor Johnson, Megan Shimojima, Stephanie Bales, Jordan Fillmore, Christina Murphy, Niamh Shalvey, Kelly Watkins and Jaclyn Zamudio.
