City urges its drivers to watch for students
With children returning to school this week, the city of San Jose is encouraging drivers to use caution when driving near schools. Many children who are attending school for the first time may not know pedestrian safety rules.
Drivers are reminded to drive 25 mph in school zones, avoid distractions, not eat or use cell phones while driving, drive with headlights on, even during the day, look for clues—such as bicycles, school safety patrollers and playgrounds—that indicate that children are in the area and practice extra caution in bad weather.
Parents and caregivers are reminded not to block or park close to crosswalks and not to double-park while dropping off or picking up children. Double-parking is not only illegal but also presents a serious safety hazard to the children.
The city is also urging parents to teach children to cross the street safely and to encourage children to use the nearest crosswalk when crossing the street and obey school crossing guards when they are around. The city also tells parents not to call to children to cross the street, as they may think it is safe to do so when it may not be.
