It took four games to do it, but the Willow Glen girls volleyball team maintained its winning ways with a thrilling win over Del Mar last week.
The Rams outlasted the Dons 15-10, 15-8, 11-15, 15-11 to cruise to a victory in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division match. Willow Glen improved to 8-0 in the division and to 17-5 for the year with the win.
"This is the best girls team that Willow Glen volleyball has ever had," said Rams coach Travis Warner. And the Rams looked like it last week.
Kelsey Roseland hammered down a team-high 15 kills to lead the Rams past the Dons. Earlier in the week, Roseland buried 14 kills in a 15-7, 16-14, 15-7 win over Santa Teresa.
Roseland, a 5-foot-10 junior middle blocker, was the league's most valuable player last year and heads up a solid corps of returners at Willow Glen this fall. Other comeback all-leaguers for the Rams include Julia Garrotto, a 5-foot-2 senior outside hitter; Carly Silva, a 5-foot-4 senior setter; and Jenny Estruth, a 5-foot-9 senior outside hitter.
Junior defensive specialists Asefash Rivera, a 5-foot-1 junior, and Serina Anaya, a 5-foot-3 senior, are first-year varsity players who Warner calls "dynamic back row defenders."
Arianne Kolar, a 5-foot-8 senior middle blocker, and Karina Estrada, a 5-foot-3 junior setter, are other top performers for the Rams.
Willow Glen will put its unblemished league record on the line this week in matches against Leigh and Overfelt. The Rams battled Leigh on Oct. 22 and will visit the Royals on Oct. 24, 5 p.m. Willow Glen will return home on Oct. 29, 6:30 p.m., to host Westmont.
Field hockey
A couple of 1-0 decisions stretched the Willow Glen girls field hockey team's record to 6-6 for the year and 4-4 in Santa Teresa Division play.
One of the 1-0 nods went Willow Glen's way. Junior Janelle Zetterquist scored a first-half goal off assists from Marina Mendez and Shannon Rooney to lead the Rams to a 1-0 win over Live Oak. But the Rams lost 1-0 to Leland later in the week.
A week earlier, the Rams had finished second at the Davis Tournament. Willow Glen tied with Los Altos for the tourney championship, but the Eagles won the tiebreaker to take the crown.
Zetterquist was named the best attacking player in the tournament, and Stacy Bruni was tabbed to the all-tournament team. Mendez was an all-tourney honorable mention pick.
Bruni, a senior forward, is a top returner for the Rams. She's joined on the letterman list by senior co-captains Lauren Leal and Michelle Burns, senior defenders Shannon Carroll and Maribel Esquerra, senior forward Stephanie Rovai, senior mid Shannon Rovai and senior goalkeeper Roxy Tabbara.
Girls tennis
The Willow Glen girls tennis team evened its league record at 6-6 with a split last week. The Rams edged Santa Teresa 4-3 but lost 5-2 to Oak Grove.
Caitlin Hannon won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to start the Rams on the road to the win over the Saints. Nhu-Chi Tran posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, and Stephanie Mansfield won 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
The No. 3 doubles team of Elizabeth Eap and Yesenia Barraza came through with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win to help Willow Glen clinch the team victory.
Edna Sison dropped a 6-1, 6-1 nod at No. 2 singles, Lisa Pierson and Kristina Ravo lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles and Ali Hodgin and Guliletta Pezzanitti fell 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles in other matches against the Saints.
Mansfield won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, and Pezzanitti and Barraza teamed for a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles, but those were the only two wins Willow Glen could manage in the 5-2 loss to Oak Grove.
A week earlier the Rams beat Yerba Buena 5-2 but lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to Piedmont Hills.
Hannon, Tran and Mansfield were singles winners against the Warriors, and the doubles teams of Hodgin and Pezzanitti and Eap and Barraza posted victories.
Hannon went three sets to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, but the Rams lost 4-3 to Piedmont Hills. Tran won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and Mansfield won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4.
