Johnson leads Rams to win over Bulldogs
By Dick Sparrer
In what was something of a throwback to the old Santa Teresa Athletic League, Willow Glen squared off with San Jose High Academy in a Saturday afternoon football game on Nov. 2.

And it was a happy homecoming for the Rams, who rolled to a 48-0 victory over the Bulldogs.

"I told the kids this is the way it used to be," said Willow Glen head coach Bob Parker after the win. And what a lopsided win it was.

The Rams took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, then scored two touchdowns in each of the last three quarters while holding the Bulldogs scoreless.

"Finally we got to play everybody in a win," added the coach.

Senior quarterback Justin Johnson had a big day for the Rams, hitting on 12 of 20 passes for 291 yards and five touchdowns. But to say that the Rams followed his strong right arm to victory would not exactly be accurate.

"Early on in the game, when it was 6-0, he was almost sacked," said Parker of Johnson. "Then he threw a spiral left-handed with a nice touch and the pass hit the guy right in stride. I didn't even know he could do that, but he couldn't have thrown it right-handed."

Johnson threw enough right-handed completions to lead the Rams to the victory. He hooked up with Frank Sarinana on four passes for 151 yards and three touchdowns, hit Tony Owens with two tosses for 69 yards, Alex Green with two for 40 yards and a TD, Tista Perri with two for seven yards, Robert Campos with one for 18 yards and Doug Dionne with one for eight yards and a score.

Parker was pleased with Johnson's performance in the win, and he also had praise for Sarinana and Dionne.

Sarinana caught four passes out of the backfield and turned three of them into touchdowns. He scored on pass plays covering 27, 52 and 72 yards. He also had three carries for 18 yards.

"He's quick," said Parker of Sarinana. "He's done a great job for us all year."

The same can be said about Dionne. The senior receiver ranks among the top pass catchers in the Santa Clara Valley this fall, but he caught just one pass on Saturday—it went for a touchdown.

Dionne also came through with his fifth pass interception of the year for the Rams, setting up a touchdown late in the game.

Johnson, who threw the three TD passes to Sarinana and the one to Dionne, also hit Green with a 25-yard touchdown pass. Junior running back Jonathan Ybarra chipped in with touchdown runs of four and five yards, and John Gibilisco kicked four extra points.

Lalo Garces was the top ground gainer for the Rams in the win, running six times for 47 yards.

Leading the charge in the offensive line for the Rams were Steve Nakatsu, just back from an injury, Jason Garcia, Nick Barretto, Nate Oxsen, Joe Sparacino, Andy Huynh and Amir Faraj-Perry. After Faraj-Perry left the game with an injury, George Ruiz came on to play well in the offensive line.

But it was more than just offense that spearheaded the Willow Glen victory.

"Defensively we did really well," said Parker, praising the work of Sarinana at defensive end and Dionne at safety.

The Rams, 2-2 in the division and 3-4 for the season, will hit the road to visit Branham on Nov. 8, 2:45 p.m. The Bruins are 2-2 in league and 5-3 for the year following a 38-6 loss to Yerba Buena last week.

Frosh-soph wins

Angel Posado picked off a pass and rambled 75 yards for a touchdown to lead the Willow Glen frosh-soph to a 12-0 win over San Jose.

Tyler Smith hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Duane Young for the other Willow Glen touchdown. Smith set up the score with a pass interception and 30-yard return.

Matt Arevalo also played well in the win for the Rams, who are now 5-2 for the year and 3-1 in league play. Willow Glen travels to Branham on Nov. 7, 2:45 p.m.
