Halloween wasn't a treat for mom and son
My small son and I stopped on Lincoln Avenue to have a slice of pizza on Halloween. Kids in costumes were everywhere, and he couldn't wait to get out of the car. A woman was in front of a store with a basket of candy, and I told him to go say "trick or treat." He did, and she gave him a Tootsie Roll and said, "We decided to give out candy, but you are not supposed to be here until three."
I was stunned by her rudeness and gave her back the Tootsie Roll. We continued down the street, and one block later we heard the same thing: "You're really not supposed to be here until three."
I was amazed by these people feeling the need to let me know I had broken some rule. Whatever the time mix-up was, there is no polite reason to say this as you hand out candy.
My son and I then went to my favorite Lincoln Avenue store, which was filled with shoppers in costumes. The people in the store were gracious and sympathetic as I complained about the other, hostile merchants. They also encourage us to write this letter.
