Blue Ribbon Task Force holds forum at WGMS
The Santa Clara County Office of Education's Blue Ribbon Task Force will hold a "Solution Forum" on Nov. 19 from 6:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Little Theatre at Willow Glen Middle School, 2105 Cottle Ave.
The public will have a chance to discuss possible solutions to Santa Clara County's teacher shortage, lagging student achievement and inadequate school funding.
Attendees may fill out comment cards if they do not want to speak publicly.
County Superintendent Colleen B. Wilcox created the task force last spring in response to a "community call to action" and to address the crisis in Silicon Valley's public education system.
The task force is co-chaired by Carl Guardino, president and CEO of the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group, and Susan Hammer, vice president of the state board of education and former mayor of San Jose.
Those with disabilities needing special assistance to participate in this meeting can call the Santa Clara County Office of Education at 408.453.6868.

Merchant receives top award in contest
Adopt-A-Doll storeowner Susanne Knott received the top award in the International Doll Artisan Guild Competition in Pomona, Calif. in October. The guild holds a contest seven times per year throughout the world for both professional and amateur doll makers.
As the owner of the business on Lincoln Ave., Knott entered her doll named "Annikita" in the professional category. At the three-day competition and show, Knott also received a master's title in the modern doll and antique reproduction categories. She also received a blue ribbon, or first place, for her entry in the antique reproduction category.
"Annikita" is an 181/2inch doll with a strawberry-blond human hair wig and green painted eyes. She is dressed as a prairie girl with fabrics sent from London, wearing brown boots and a bonnet.
"She has the sweetest face," Knott says about the doll. "You just want to pinch it."
Knott's students submitted eight dolls in the amateur category, receiving three blue ribbons and five red, or second place, ribbons. Adopt-A-Doll, 1041 Lincoln Ave., holds five doll-making classes per week and buys and sells antique dolls, doll dresses, wigs, eyes and pattern books.
