Downtown San Jose offers plenty of noteworthy galleries and museums for art enthusiasts and collectors. While you're visiting these galleries or their gift shops, you might even find some ideas for holiday gifts. The following is a roundup of downtown galleries and museums, with some updates on current exhibitions.
* Circle-A Skateboards and Shoes, 304 S. Third St., 408.995.0677, MondaySaturday, 10 a.m.9 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.7 p.m. Younger art enthusiasts who shop at this skateboard store might also enjoy perusing the store's hallway, which serves as a gallery for local artists.

* Phantom Galleries, www.populuspresents.com/main/pg/index.html. POPULUS Presents has put up temporary local art exhibits in vacant storefront windows on S. First Street.
* San Jose Art League (SJAL), 19 N. Second St., Suite 102, www.sjal.org or 408.294.4545. Founded in 1938, SJAL recently moved from its old Willow Glen location to an office in the downtown Arts Development Center. The SJAL is exhibiting oil paintings by Arnold Chao at Orchard Valley Coffee in downtown Campbell through mid-January.
* San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, 451 S. First St., www.sjica.org or 408.283.8155, Tuesday, Wednesday. and Friday, 10 a.m.5 p.m., Thursday, 10 a.m.8 p.m., and Saturday, noon5 p.m. "Color in Space," a retrospective of the work of Bay Area artist and former San José State University professor Sam Richardson, continues until Jan. 18. "Drip Drop," a video projection created by Jeanne Finley and John Muse for nighttime display in the gallery's front window, will be featured until Feb. 1. The institute's retail store sells jewelry, pottery and other decorative items, all made by local artists.

For the first time since the museum's opening more than 30 years ago, the permanent collection will be on long-term display in "Collection Highlights" in the downstairs galleries. "Evocations: Sharon Ellis, 19912001" is a 10-year survey of Los Angeles painter Sharon Ellis' work (ends Feb. 16). "L.A. Post-Cool" features new works from Southern California artists and examines the "post-cool" trend in the Los Angeles art scene (ends March 23). The museum store sells books related to the exhibitions, as well as ties, scarves, stationery and other merchandise.
