NorCal Champs: The Presentation Panthers celebrate after beating El Molino to claim the Northern California Division 3 girls volleyball championship.
Panthers win NorCal title; local players are all-league
By Dick Sparrer
The season ended with a loss for the girls volleyball team at Presentation High School this fall—but what a season it was.

The Panthers won Central Coast Section (CCS) and Northern California championships before losing to Bishop Montgomery of Southern California in the Division 3 state finals last Saturday at Cypress College down south.

The Panthers lost 13-15, 15-5, 18-16, 15-8 to Bishop Montgomery in the state title decision to wrap up the year with a solid 29-8 record.

Senior setter Dawn Stanley and senior middle blocker Katie Turley-Molony starred in the match for the Panthers, but they came up just short in the cliffhanger.

Earlier in the week, coach Stephen Santonastaso's Presentation girls had beaten El Molino 15-8, 15-11, 11-15, 16-14 to win the NorCal crown.

Turley-Molony joined with senior right side hitter Paris Raissinia and junior outside hitter Therese Vinal to lead the Panthers to the title-clinching victory.

Presentation earned the place in the NorCal finals by winning the CCS Division 3 championship, then opening the Northern California playoffs with easy three-game wins over Anderson and Union MineEl Dorado.

The Panthers had moved from the tough Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League (BVAL) to the West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) for the 2002 season. They didn't win the league championship—that title went to St. Francis—but the stiff competition prepared them well for the postseason.

Four members of the Presentation squad were selected to the prestigious all-league team in the WCAL.

Raissinia and Turley-Molony were each named to the all-league first team, and Vinal and Stanley won all-league second team honors.

Junior Jessica Gysin of St. Francis was named the league's most valuable player.

Willow Glen won the championship in the Blossom Valley Athletic League's Santa Teresa Division, and the Rams were aptly honored when it came time for coaches to select their all-league team.

Sensational junior middle blocker Kelsey Roseland topped a list of five Rams winning special honors on the all-league squad.

Roseland, the league's most valuable player in the West Valley Division a year ago, was tabbed the Santa Teresa Division's co-MVP this year along with Del Mar senior middle blocker Sara Kolstad.

Ram Stars: Willow Glen seniors Jenny Estruth (6) and Julia Garrotto (17) were among the Rams named to the all-league team.

Senior outside hitters Jenny Estruth and Julia Garrotto and junior setter Karina Estrada earned places on the all-league first team for Willow Glen. Senior setter Carly Silva was tabbed to the all-league second team.

Willow Glen's Travis Warner, who has led the Rams to back-to-back championships in the West Valley and Santa Teresa divisions, was selected as the coach of the year.

Del Mar junior setter Stevie Odle was picked to the all-league second team.
