Garlands, lights bring cheer to Lincoln Avenue
By William Jeske
The Willow Glen Business and Professional Association (WGBPA) is not going to take the holiday season lightly.

The association wants Lincoln Avenue, between Minnesota and Coe avenues, lighted and decorated through December and is determined not to let problems with a circuit breaker leave anyone in the dark.

Just about every pair of streetlights on either side of the street is connected with a string of lights or with green artificial foliage decorated with red bows, lights and a lantern.

Lincoln Avenue strollers appreciate the effort made by the association to liven up the avenue this holiday season.

Eleanor Davis, a Willow Glen resident for 17 years, said, "I like the decorations. They're not overdone—just enough to be enjoyable."

Linda Waltrip, owner of Park Place Vintage and second vice president of the WGBPA, was in charge of finding a consultant for Lincoln Avenue's first block-long decorations project, which Waltrip said has been long overdue.

With a budget of $10,000 that came from the association's Business Improvement District funds and proceeds from this year's Dancin' on the Avenue event, Waltrip hired Sierra Display of Fresno to decorate the avenue.

"They provided the garlands and the lights, and the decorations are going to go up timely and come down timely," Waltrip said.

Aqui Cal-Mex, 1079 Lincoln Ave., was providing power for the garlands between Brace and Willow streets, but, according to Waltrip, a circuit breaker was keeping the lights from coming on. Things were fine Dec. 5, but the power cut off Dec. 6; it was fixed later that same evening.

With the problem solved, the lights will be shining throughout December, as part of the Holiday Traditions, which features carolers strolling the avenue, gift-wrapping, a food drive for the Fraternal Order of Eagles, stores staying open late, and themed shopping nights, such as Stocking Stuffer Night Dec. 19 and cookie decorating at Le Boulanger on Lincoln Avenue Dec. 22.

Richard Periandri, enjoying coffee with his wife, Kendy, said the decorations looked festive.

Waltrip has additional decoration ideas for the garlands along the avenue for sometime in the future.

"We would probably want to add more features," she said. "Maybe at the crosswalks or the rooftops at the entrances would be a nice addition."
