Pre-war Austria provides the backdrop for a musical steeped in real-life drama, romance and tragedy as American Musical Theatre presents The Sound of Music at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. A timeless Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein score written for the film version of the story brings a family of seven children, their widowed father and a spirited governess alive in song, dance and love.
A true story, The Sound of Music follows the life of Maria, a strong-willed nun-in-training that is sent to serve as a governess for the widowed Captain von Trapp's seven children. Maria brings music and laughter back into a home marked by tragedy. The captain and Maria find love and marriage, only to return from their honeymoon to a Nazi-invaded Austria.
This powerful story is a family favorite for its unforgettable music, including "My Favorite Things," "Do Re Mi," and "Edelweiss."
Broadway actors will recreate the lead roles on the San Jose stage. Sarah Uriarte Berry plays Maria, and William Michals plays Captain
von Trapp.
'The Sound of Music' runs Jan. 17 through Feb. 2 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts at 255 Almaden Blvd. in downtown San Jose. For ticket information, call 408.453.7108 or visit www.amtsj.org. Tickets are $40 to $65.
